Mayor Martin J. Walsh wants Boston residents and businesses to pitch in on keeping the city clean, and so far his constituents have no problem with the suggestion.
Mayor Walsh is absolutely right, that property owners, whether it be residents or businesses, should take as active a role in keeping the city clean as they can, said Meg Mainzer-Cohen, president of the Back Bay Association. There are some property owners that dont take any responsibility whatsoever.
Walsh told a gathering of North End businesspeople yesterday that hes asking every man, woman and business owner to grab a broom and clean up their neighborhoods. The request is part of Walshs two-week Boston Shines campaign, which will start later in West Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, Roxbury, Allston and Brighton.
I do think people should sweep in front of their house and I do think businesses should sweep in front of their business. It shouldnt be the sole responsibility of the city to clean the streets. People should take pride in their neighborhoods, Walsh said, after telling a North End Chamber of Commerce breakfast that parts of Boston are filthy.
Neighborhood leaders echoed the mayors sentiment.
Theres always room for improvement, said Brad Brown, president of the Jamaica Plain Business and Professional Association. People would be happier.
Business owners hoped their peers would heed the mayors request.
Its important to keep the area around your business clean. I think it makes the city more appealing for the visitors we accommodate, said Bruno Marini, chief operating officer of Strega Waterfront, where a worker was sweeping the sidewalk yesterday.
Go out and sweep in front of your gutter, Walsh said, disputing the notion that its the citys job. Its not that hard. I do it. Other people do it. Taxes arent just there for street cleaning. Taxes are there for public safety. Taxes are there for educating kids. Taxes are there to make sure the water and sewer is running properly. Taxes are there to make sure all city services keep moving forward.

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is a nonprofit wildlife conservation organization dedicated to protecting wild elk and other wildlife and the land they inhabit. This organization was started around 1984 and has around 1,000 members in the Gorge and 200,000 members nationwide.
The group has four main areas of focus: land protection, habitat stewardship, elk restoration and hunting heritage.
The Charity Navigator (Americas largest charity evaluator) has given the foundation six consecutive four-star ratings, its highest rating. Only 3 percent of other charities in America have had this achievement.
Recently, the RMEF has had its hand in local wildlife preservation agreements. On Dec. 30, 2013, more than 13,000 acres of land in the John Day area that adjoins the Malheur National Forest became permanently protected wildlife habitat.
The RMEF also joined public and private organizations last year to improve 100 acres of wildlife habitat in the Gorge. It has since received prescribed burn, herbicide spray and grass re-seeding.
Hood River will be the site for the North Central Oregon Chapters 25th anniversary banquet, to be held at the armory on April 26 at 4:30 p.m. This event will be limited to 250 people.
Last year, this fundraiser raised $50,000. The group hopes to hit $60,000 this year. Raffles, live auctions, and silent auctions will all be at the event courtesy of local business donations. ODFW is planning to auction off its statewide antelope tag as well.
The original co-founders of the RMEF, Charlie Decker and Bob Munson, will also be in attendance. Old-time country-western singer Joni Harms will perform after the banquet.
Tickets are available at http://bit.ly/1liXizu. For more information contact Randy Klantchnek at 541-490-1382.

It took Naples officials 25 years to get the proposed Gordon River park off the ground.
Now, after an auction last month raised $5 million to help build it, some citizens are asking Naples City Council to proceed with caution, pointing out part of the Riverside Circle property is an old landfill with high levels of methane and arsenic.
They want more studies, assurances and cost estimates that consider environmental problems before the city proceeds with engineering, architectural and landscaping phases.
On Tuesday, council is expected to discuss a 2004 city study that showed methane in nearly all 12 drilling locations on the property, and a September 2013 filter marsh report that revealed landfill contaminants were leaching into an adjacent marsh, where the city installed a filter to treat stormwater runoff.
A historical landfill that has been documented to have methane gas and arsenic is contaminating the filter marsh to the northwest of the landfill site, said Corey Cabral, a citizen activist who has emailed city officials about his concerns.
This site has a very high risk of settling if developed, said Cabral, a certified general contractor who spent 35 years in development and construction. If the buildings settle, then the foundations crack and they can fail. These cracks also allow methane gas into the buildings.
He noted design professionals suggest light-load, passive uses for landfill properties, such as bike and hiking trails.
They recommend quiet, low-impact things not Disneyland on the Gordon River, he said of the park, which is expected to include a carousel, pavilion, a caf, rock climbing, gazebos, restrooms, a 40-foot hill, lakes and waterfalls.
The Trust for Public Land, a San Francisco-based think tank, estimates at least 4,500 acres of landfills in large cities were successfully turned into parks, ball fields, golf courses, basketball and tennis courts.
The Florida Department of Environmental Protections protocols for building on landfills recommends caution due to unacceptable risks to human health and the environment.
