Take a look at Britain's wackiest SHEDS

    - April 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Looks like garden sheds are no longer just for keeping the lawn mower in [TIM STEWART]

A new competition has revealed some of the wackiest sheds from across the country, including beach huts, boats, castles, railway signal boxes and diners.

Almost 2,000 sheds were entered into the contest, run by garden woodcare brand Cuprinol, including 308 pubs and 17 Doctor Who-themed Tardises.

Researchers found that many Britons see their garden shed as far more than just a place to put their lawnmower in fact they store an average of 457 worth of items in them.

Four in ten sheds boast lighting while over a third (35 per cent) have electricity and one in ten (11 per cent) are heated.

An extravagant seven per cent of sheds have a TV, five per cent a sofa and two per cent include a hot tub for their owner to enjoy a soak away from the house.

Not content with somewhere to watch television or take a dip, some people have taken their garden sheds even further.

One such owner is Garry Wells-Larter, from Leicester, who has transformed his shed into a nightclub.

Trained carpenter Garry fitted out "Bar Code" with two sound systems, a 42 inch plasma TV with surround sound playing music videos, karaoke machine, remote-controlled neon and disco lights, plasma ball and full bar.

Although it can only fit 12 people at full capacity, Garry says his bar "packs a punch" to make up for its size.

QUIRKY WORLD … Shedding light on some hidden habits

    - April 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Guilt-racked Britons are using their sheds to eat unhealthy snacks and store love letters from old flames, a new survey has shown.

One in five shed owners admits to spending time in out-buildings to avoid their partners while 8% would rather hide away in their shed than be intimate with their partner.

Britons love their sheds so much that the average person spends almost a year of their life in them.

Research by Cuprinol to mark the start of the annual Shed of the Year competition reveals more than 14m people in the UK now owns a shed.

According to the study, 9% of shed owners in Britain use it to store secret unhealthy snacks, 8% hide cigarettes, 4% keep love letters from a former partner, and 11% admit using their sheds to make secret phone calls.

The research also shows that many now see their sheds as an extension of the home, with 35% featuring electricity, and 7% having a television.

Last years winner was Alex Holland from Machynlleth, Wales, for his boat-roofed shed a unique and beautifully crafted shed made from a recycled boat for a roof and located at an altitude of 230m above sea level in the Cambrian Mountain range.

There is a thing called addition by subtraction.

That is what the Philadelphia Eagles did Friday. By flat out releasing DeSean Jackson, they added a greater probability that they will have a harmonious, drama-free locker room this season. They added the assurance that Jackson will not create a distraction. That he will not pout or sulk or hold out over a contract that was set to pay him $10.5 million in 2014 and make him the fifth-highest-paid receiver in the National Football League but apparently wasn't good enough for him.

Addition by subtraction -- that's how little Chip Kelly thought of 27-year-old Jackson.

And I don't necessarily blame him.

Jackson is a talented football player. He is wickedly fast. He is impossible to defend on the outside in single coverage. Throw him the ball, and he will go get it. Jackson has proved to be a threat to score whenever and however he touches the football. When he wants to.

That's the rub. When Jackson is good, he is game-changing good. When he is bad, he is chemistry-killing bad. You don't get one without the other.

Even though this is Kelly's second season as the Eagles' head coach, it is his first real opportunity to retool the Philadelphia roster he inherited from Andy Reid. Kelly has a season under his belt. He had an opportunity to evaluate firsthand every player on the roster. He became intimately aware of every player's strengths and weaknesses, his work habits, his dedication, his attitude, his practice tendencies, his commitment to good nutrition and sleep habits.

Kelly now can make informed decisions on how a player fits, or doesn't fit, into his program, into his system and into his plans.

That is why the Eagles gave Riley Cooper a five-year, $25 million contract before Cooper hit free agency last month. Kelly liked Cooper's production. He liked his physicality. He liked that Cooper valued blocking. And he liked the accountability Cooper showed after he was caught on video using a racial slur at a Kenny Chesney concert last summer.

    Cooper fit. Jackson did not.
