If youre a Madison tree hugger and you have a tree marked with a yellow, spray-painted dot in your terrace, hug it goodbye.

The city is in the midst of removingthousands of trees in the wake of last Novembers discovery of the emerald ash borer on Madison's north side, making Dane County one of 22 Wisconsin counties where the ash borer infestation has been confirmed.

Forestry plans to remove ash street trees over the next several years (not necessarily this year) that meet the EAB preemptive removal criteria as approved in the citys EAB Plan, says Madison Parks spokeswoman Laura Whitmore in an email. Forestry staff is still surveying the east side in preparation for treatments thatare slated to begin late May dependent upon spring thaw and will continue marking ash street trees that meet the preemptive removal criteria.

So far, Whitmore says, the city has removed about 500 ash trees that have been infested with the pesky beetle, mostly on the north and east sides, although preemptive removals will also happen on the west side as city arborists perform routine tree maintenance.

While some trees will be treated to fight off the ash borers, many of the citys nearly 22,000 ash streettrees are not salvageable.

Whitmore says the city is aiming to replace the trees within 12 months of removal. The type of replacement tree will depend on the location, the soil and other conditions.

Some of the first to go, according tothe removal plan, will be about 3,000 trees located under power lines, since utilities have already pruned them back enough to reduce the canopy, about 2,000 trees in declining health and about 4,300 trees in good condition, but with diameters of under 10 inches, since biannual treatment injections would cause them too much damage.

SAN JOSE, Calif. Steve Fernholz looked out the window of his Seattle home and got an idea for an Internet of Things startup.

"I was watching the way my mom was watering the trees on my behalf, and I thought, 'That's the way to do it. Just give each plant what it needs,'" he told us. "A couple days later, I had a prototype with parts from a model flying airplane, and now, nine months later, I have a startup."

Thus was born Droplet, a next-generation automated sprinkler that taps into weather and soil data over the web to deliver carefully calibrated amounts of water to each plant in a yard. Fernholz said it can slash water bills as much as 90% -- about $253 a year for the average user.

The device, now available on Amazon.com for $299.99, includes a sprinkler head, a timer, and a Raspberry Pi controller board. It uses a Realtek 802.11b/g/n controller to link to the Internet over a home WiFi net like another access point.

"We looked at different IoT protocols, such as low-power Bluetooth and Zigbee, but for the range and ease of use, we chose WiFi," said Fernholz, a former Microsoft employee who worked on Bing, Office, and Windows.

The $299.99 Droplet device has a range of about 30 feet.

Users can manage the devices via a browser, or they can use iOS and Android apps that will be available when Droplet starts shipping in June. "Our connected services suite is where the device really shines." For example, it can delay watering until it finds out how much of a predicted downpour actually falls.

The five-person company is hiring another four or five developers and has closed a small seed round with investors. The next major goal is to develop a version for farmers, probably sometime next year. "It's a personal goal of mine to effect social change by empowering better farm yields and better water use."

A lthough a sprinkler system may not have stopped the fire that ravaged James Monroe Elementary School, it certainly might have helped, according to Edison Fire Chief Brian Latham.

He said fire sprinklers could have controlled the fire, but in many circumstances, fire sprinklers have failed to contain fires.

It is definitely better to have them than not, he said.

James Monroe Elementary School, which was built in 1963, did not have a sprinkler system in place nor was it required to.

The fire at the school on Sharp Road began around 8 p.m. March 22, and firefighters fought the blaze through the night.

A facilities management supervisor at the elementary school Jerome C. Higgins, 48, of East Brunswick was charged on March 24 with a disorderly persons offense for allegedly smoking inside the school and then tossing the lit cigarette into a trash bin, igniting the blaze that ultimately consumed the school.

Board of Education President Gene Maeroff said the question of sprinklers will be examined.

No schools were required to install sprinklers until 1977, he said, adding that the Edison School District has not built a new school since 1972.
