Sprinkler system wire mistaken for 'suspicious' device at Canton school

A loose wire from a sprinkler system outside a Canton elementary school sparked an all-out response from the state police bomb squad this morning after someone walking their dog reported seeing the suspicious but ultimately benign device, officials said.

Canton police, firefighters and the state police bomb squad were called to the Dean Luce Elementary School sometime after 7:15 a.m., after a passer-by saw a wire sticking up from the ground, said Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Granatino.

It was a wire that feeds into our sprinkler system, he said. It was sticking out of the ground and actually was admitting a ticking sound because of the feed from the sprinkler system.

Granatino said authorities quickly determined it posed no danger. Students had not yet arrived for school, and he said the very few people in the building at the time werent evacuated.

No one was ever in danger, he said, adding that by the time school started, police and firefighters had already cleared the scene.

State police said in a statement earlier this morning their bomb squad was investigating, but that Canton firefighters had determined it was not incendiary.
