Energy Adviser: Trailer takes sustainability on the road - June 7, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

In the Planet Clark trailer, you can rap your knuckles on countertops made of paper, inspect a heat-recovery ventilator and ask questions about green building standards.

You have several opportunities in the next few months to explore the 20-foot trailer, which is bursting with information about environmental sustainability.

It will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 23 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 24 at the Recycled Arts Festival in Esther Short Park, on Eighth Street between Columbia and Esther streets in downtown Vancouver.

It will be open July 4 at the Felida Fourth of July Children's Parade and Celebration in Felida Park off Northwest 36th Avenue and 122nd Street.

And from Aug. 3-12, it will be stationed at the Clark County Fair, 17402 N.E. Delfel Road.

The trailer is operated by Planet Clark, a partnership among three departments within Clark County government to educate people about such topics as building permits, stormwater rules and energy efficiency. Clark Public Utilities was among 20 sponsors that helped create the trailer, which first hit the road in April 2011. Since then, about 5,400 people have toured it.

Planet Clark staff members came up with the idea for the trailer full of exhibits after spending a year sitting in booths at home shows.

"We were handing out pens and brochures and being very boring," said Mike Selig, the county's energy-efficiency services coordinator. "So we bought the trailer. We felt it would be really effective to get into the community and have hands-on activities."

The county bought the trailer for $10,000, and sponsors contributed an estimated $25,000 in labor and materials, Selig said.

Selig is excited about several recent additions to the trailer. One new display is the Daikin Altherma, a domestic heating and hot water system that delivers between 3 and 5 kilowatt hours of usable heat for every 1 kilowatt it uses. Another new addition is the LifeBreath Heat Recovery Ventilating system, which pumps fresh air into the home and stale air out, all while retaining 80 percent of the heat from the indoor air.

A local designer at Kips Bay showhouse - June 7, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

When an e-mail from famous New York interior designer Bunny Williams showed up in her inbox March 27, Raji Radhakrishnan knew the news was good. The designer, based in the Brambleton neighborhood of Loudoun County, had been selected to participate in New Yorks 2012 Kips Bay Decorator Show House, akin in the design world to winning an Oscar.

I almost fell off my chair, says Radhakrishnan. (It was a vintage art deco desk chair, by the way.) She had submitted her portfolio to the Kips Bay committee for several years but had never been chosen. For a designer, I dont think it can get better than this.

(Marco Ricca/RAJI RADHAKRISMNAN) - Nice views, inside and out: Loudoun Countys Raji Radhakrishnan designed a homeoffice for a museum curator at the Kips Bay Decorator Show House.

(Greg Powers/GREG POWERS) - Interior designer Raji Radhakrishnan, who's based in Loudoun County.

Williams, who is this years show house chair, invited Radhakrishnan to walk through the show house venue: two huge luxury duplexes at the Aldyn, a contemporary high-rise building on Manhattans Upper West Side. They are on the market for $16.9 million and $15.9 million each. Radhakrishnan was one of 32 designers who had five weeks to come up with design schemes for the spaces, which opened to the public for a month-long gig May 16.

The great thing about Kips Bay is that they let you run with your imagination. You can turn a bedroom into a meditation room or a lounge, says Radhakrishnan, who started her business in 2005 and opened a New York office this spring. Her concept: a home office for the chief curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Because nearly all the rooms were white boxes with big glass windows, she says she knew she had to make hers special and sophisticated without going against the architecture. She had pearl white Venetian plaster applied to the walls and ceiling. It enveloped the space and gave the room a beautiful glow, and still was clean and modern, she says.

It was a fitting backdrop for 20th-century vintage pieces, including a 1960 bar cabinet and Arts and Crafts rug, plus furniture from contemporary designers. She installed a white marble mantel for architectural heft and hung two large photo murals. The curators desk, made of wood and leather, is from Ralph Lauren Home.

A curator would have only beautiful, comfortable and practical things in their home, Radhakrishnan says. Thats what guided me.

The 40th annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House, at 60 Riverside Blvd., New York, is open daily through June 14. Admission is $30. The money raised benefits the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club after-school and enrichment programs for New York City children. What to leave, what to take? - June 7, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Members of the South Dakota National Guard, most from the 139th Brigade Support Battalion, help the Brookings County Register of Deeds office move records books Monday afternoon, from the Brookings County Courthouse to the new records room in the Brookings City & County Government Center. The Guard members offered help during their two-week annual training, and their assistance came four days earlier than expected, keeping Register of Deeds Beverly Chapman on her toes./ Register of Deeds record books left the Brookings County Courthouse on Monday afternoon through a first-floor window. Photos by Jill Fier/Register City, county staffers prepare for The Big Move

BROOKINGS Anybody whos ever packed up a house and trucked everything across town or across the country knows what a pain moving can be.

Youre climbing out your comfort zone to jump into uncharted waters to say nothing of the time-consuming, very real work of sorting and packing a lifetimes belongings and then making the new home your personal space.

Now imagine youve been accumulating stuff for a hundred years, and instead of Mom, Dad and the kids youve got more than 60 people and more than a dozen different departments to get settled. That might give you some idea of the massive upheaval the workers at city hall and the courthouse are going through these days in preparation for the Big Move to the Brookings City & County Government Center.

As city manager and commission assistant, Jeff Weldon and Stephanie Ellwein have been handed the task of herding a gaggle of box-toting humans into a brand-new administrative center.

The actual physical move of county and city offices is scheduled to take place next week, from June 11-15, but weve already been at it for six months, Ellwein announced in mid-April. The courthouse clan knew theyd have their hands full, by virtue of the fact that they and their predecessors had been accumulating documents for a entire century and those would have to be dealt with.

The county department heads joined in a transition team to plan for the exodus.

    Destroying unnecessary records

Since April, Ellwein explained, courthouse staffers have been destroying duplicate records strictly according to state document destruction policies. Register of Deeds Beverly Chapman even had to get approval from Pierre to dump some of her old papers.

Ellwein says the county staffers even had to pull boxes of records from the crawl spaces below the courthouse. At the time, she said, they couldve used a couple of trained cave explorers.

ROHM Introduces Guidepost Cell – a New Indoor High-Accuracy Location Detection Infrastructure Powered by Energy … - June 7, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAN DIEGO, June 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --ROHM, in collaboration with Ritsumeikan University and Information Services International Dentsu, Ltd. (ISID), recently announced Guidepost Cell (TM), a unique indoor location detection infrastructure that supplies highly precise positional data to smartphones and other mobile devices to determine a user's location inside buildings, underground malls and other interior areas using low-power 802.11-compliant wireless beacon protocol.

    (Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120605/MM19756LOGO)

    Demand-Driven Technology

A variety of mobile devices that utilize Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and other outdoor location detection services have been produced in recent years. However, GPS operation is often spotty or non-existent indoors, driving the demand for better performance. As a result, several new positioning methods are currently being researched, including broadcasting GPS signals indoors or diverting radio waves transmitted from wireless LAN base stations.

In response to this burgeoning market need, ROHM, Ritsumeikan University and ISID co-developed Guidepost Cell technology, which utilizes advanced location detection and energy harvesting methods to enable an expected positional accuracy within 1 meter (3'), while requiring no external power source for operation.

    Key Guidepost Cell Advantages

    Dye-sensitized Solar Cell (DSC)

2 high-rises to take over parking lot near CenturyLink Field - June 7, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    by KING 5 News

Posted on June 6, 2012 at 1:28 PM

    Updated yesterday at 2:48 PM

SEATTLE -- Two of the SODO neighborhood's largest developers plan to build two new high-rise towers in the second phase of Stadium Place, the urban development project just north of CenturyLink Field, and hope to begin construction by summer of 2013.

Daniels Real Estate and American Life Inc. unveiled plans for Stadium Place East in the Pioneer Square neighborhood. The development will complement Stadium Place West, currently under construction, and will be located next to the regional transit hub at King Street Station.

The new development will include two towers with a 23-story 278-room conference hotel, ballroom, health club, 16,000-square feet of retail space, 14,000-square feet of restaurant space and 376 parking stalls. A 170,000-square-foot office tower will be added later. (more below)

When the King County Council approves the final agreements on parking and the affordable housing components later this summer, developers say construction can begin in summer of 2013; early phases of the project are expected to be complete by early 2015.

City and county officials, along with community members, have been working on redeveloping the site for years and say the ambitious urban development project was critical for revitalizing Pioneer Square.

"We heard the residents and business-owners of Pioneer Square when they told us that the Stadium Place project was crucial to the well-being of the neighborhood. This announcement brings the full development together, serving as an example of how neighborhood, government and a development team can work together to ensure that urban places are lively, livable and viable," King County Councilmember Joe McDermott said in a released statement.
