Located in the area at the intersection of Benfield Boulevard and Evergreen Road, West Severna Park truly is at the heart of it all. There are approximately 238 homes, most of which were built in the 1950s and 1960s. The community has a beautiful beach with a playground and cabana, a marina with a ramp and boat storage, and is an easy walk to the Severn River Swim Club and Evergreen pool. Kinder Farm Park is a short hike up the B&A Trail, and downtown Severna Park is just a short walk or bike ride away.
The community cabana can be reserved for parties, and includes a long pier for fishing, a kayak rack, big sandy beach with a playground, and swimming pier. It is one of the few, maybe only, beaches with indoor plumbing and an outdoor shower.
The West Severna Park residents host several events, including Oktoberfest, a luau, newcomers key exchange, cleanup days at the marina and beach, fishing derby, and an active moms group and senior group.
Located directly across from the new Severna Park High School, children in this neighborhood attend Severna Park Elementary, Severna Park Middle and Severna Park High schools. Once in high school, there is no need to vie for a coveted senior parking pass, as students can easily skip the Benfield traffic and walk to school faster than any parent can get them to the drop-off loop.
Ed KnebelResident for 24 Years
Ed Knebels family was planning a move in 1996, so they asked everyone they knew for suggestions. A coworker mentioned that he loved West Severna Park because of the sense of community, water privileges and the schools.
The schools helped [with our decision], said Knebel, but I really fell in love with the marina. This is a very friendly community, with amenities that bring people together.
Knebel said when he gets asked about West Severna Park, he recommends the community for its easy access to locally owned restaurants and businesses.
The amenities here are a great way to build relationships with neighbors, said Knebel, adding that volunteering with neighbors and attending community events is a great way to get to know people.
Many times over the years I have witnessed the community supporting each other, mostly with food support, but even with dog walking and dog play dates, Knebel added. We have personally received support from the community on several occasions, and were overwhelmed with the magnitude of generosity. We are grateful to live in such a caring community.
Ed has volunteered as the communitys marina chairman since 1999.
Scott and Mary SchanerResidents for 20 Years
Scott Schaner graduated from Severna Park; his wife, Mary, graduated from Andover High School. When it was time to put down their familys roots, they chose West Severna Park.
Mary and I were looking for a neighborhood with great schools and water amenity access. We lived in Pasadena and decided that once we had children, we would either send them to private school or just spend the same money on a house in Severna Park.
All four Schaner children attended Severna Park schools. Their youngest will graduate from Severna Park High School this May and study nursing at Towson University. Their two oldest children are a teacher in Anne Arundel County Public Schools, and a naval officer who recently earned an engineering degree. Their fourth child is in college now. Scott feels the Severna Park school system prepared his children well for college and careers.
West Severna Park is a very active community with amazing volunteers, said Scott. Our community is 100% volunteer and there is a ton of work! It is incredible to see how much work our members volunteer for, but they do it because it is the culture of our community.
Scott credits his neighbors as being the best part of living in West Severna Park, and estimates that there are about 50 active community members serving as officers or members of committees, or simply doing things that help without recognition.
Just recently, the Sullivans organized an annual Souper Bowl that collects pantry items for SPAN, a local food bank, on Super Bowl Sunday, noted Scott. One of our residents, Charlie Phelps, who just turned 100 years old, volunteers his time regularly cleaning up tree debris and other items at our community beach. Charlie seeks no recognition, but I think he is the embodiment of a WSP resident.
If Scott had to narrow down the best aspects of West Severna Park, hed say first, that the community loves to have a great party, so there are lots of them, and second, is the very active volunteer mindset.
Our neighbors, the Trentlys, are original homeowners, so I got to hear the stories about Severna Park back when Benfield was a dirt road and that the high school was originally very small, added Scott. Our adjacent neighbors are all very nice and vary in family size. I walk my dog daily and it is always just nice to see my neighbors as we are out.
Scott was the community beach maintenance chairman for a few years and also served as community president for five years. Currently, hes on the board of directors. Mary organizes a showcase of homes for neighbors who had home improvements and want to share ideas with neighbors.
Dan & Katie MillsResidents for 5 Years
Dan, Katie, Ashley and Noah Mills moved to West Severna Park from Canton in Baltimore City in 2015. Katie Mills is a Linstead native and a Severna Park High School graduate.
The Mills children attend Severna Park Elementary School, and Dan and Katie say the family could not be happier.
We absolutely love the school! Amazing teachers and staff who organize fun activities including a spring fair, ice cream social, plays and musicals, a variety show, and more, said Dan. When our oldest child, a girl, started kindergarten, there were at least 13 other West Severna Park girls in kindergarten at Severna Park Elementary School!
Katie isnt the only one who wanted to move back to Severna Park.
When we moved here in 2015, we met so many kind people, many of whom have lived here for a long time, but also folks like us who wanted to move back to Severna Park once we had kids, added Dan. To us, the residents are what make West Severna Park so special. The amenities are great, but its our neighbors who make it where we want to live in for a long time.
Dan serves on the community board, and Katie and Dan both volunteer at the elementary school on a weekly basis. The whole family helps out with beach cleanups and, and Katie is in the community moms club.

Experience Bali Bliss at The Mulia - Better Homes and Gardens

We may be in the thick of winter, but here's a warm and welcoming thought: It won't be long before the flowers begin budding, trees start blooming, and the grass goes into a green-up mode.
While that can be a comforting notion, it should also be cause for consideration: Will your yard be ready for the forthcoming growing season? The experts agree that it's best to ramp up plans for needed gardening and landscaping maintenance soon to ensure a healthy and attractive exterior property.
"Fall and winter come with a lot of problems that have to be cleaned up so that you can properly prepare your outdoor spaces for springtime," says Rhianna Miller, lawn and garden designer and improvement expert with Rubber Mulch in Lakewood, New Jersey. "It's important to plan this spring maintenance well in advance, while the weather is still cool and dry. That way, you can finish up well before the spring rains come through, as wet weather makes cleanup and outdoor maintenance difficult."
Angie Hicks, the co-founder of Indianapolis-based Angie's List, echoes these recommendations.
"Early spring is a very unpredictable time of year where weather swings make conditions look ideal one day and ruinous the next. But preparing early for these conditions will set your lawn and grounds up for success throughout the growing season," Hicks says.
To give your yard the best chance for springtime triumph, follow these tips once the ground thaws and temperatures start consistently rising:
Take a walk around your property.
"Identify trees and shrubs impacted by winter, and prune as needed to prevent further damage," suggests Bob Mann, lawn and landscape expert with the National Association of Landscape Professionals in Fairfax, Virginia. Also, "pick up any branches, leaves and debris that may have fallen during the winter, and clean up the area you are preparing to work with," advises Hicks. Also, "remove items from your lawn, like furniture or toys, to reveal or prevent bald spots," says Bryan Ostlund, executive director of Grass Seed USA.
Inspect hardscapes.
Look for misalignment, cracks and landscape lighting that needs to be adjusted, and determine what repairs are required.
Assess the health of your lawn. "Excessive winter weather and snow piles can kill grass. So check for bare spots, brown grass and compacted areas that need repair," adds Mann.
Prep your lawn.
"Rake, aerate, dethatch and level your lawn as needed using a specialized rake, aerator machine and shovel," Miller says.
You may need to overseed your yard this spring, or install new sod if the condition is extremely bad.-
Reseed or sod as needed.
"Choose a grass that suits your climate, and allow it to sprout before you begin mowing," Miller continues. Additionally, "avoid applying any pre-emergent with your early spring lawn treatment if you plan on planting new grass seed or installing sod. Instead, simply apply a balanced organic-based fertilizer in these areas," Hicks notes. "But if you plan on waiting until the autumn to do your annual grass planting or sod installation, it's best to apply a crabgrass barrier pre-emergent plus fertilizer to your lawn at this time."
Prep the soil before planting.
For all garden vegetables and plants, be sure the soil is in proper condition for planting. "Test the soil to make sure it has all the proper nutrients, and add organic matter or compost to the soil at the time of planting to improve soil structure and promote deeper roots," says Hicks. "This will mean less stress from insects, disease and heat."
With a little preparation, you'll be ready to enjoy your yard all summer long.-
Improve flower and garden beds.
"Start by raking garden beds and create a permanent edging to define the space, which you can do by pushing a flat-bladed shovel straight down at the edge of the bed and kicking the shovel forward," says Mann. Next, apply a 2- to 4-inch layer of fresh mulch over all your beds to reduce weeds throughout the season and retain moisture.
Before the season begins, take the time to sharpen the blades on your garden tools and lawn mower.-
Ready your mower.
Sharpen or replace your mower blades, making sure to remove the spark plug before doing so. "Dull blades can tear your grass and put your lawn at risk for fungus, causing it to turn a tan or brown color," cautions Hicks.
Remember to set a correct mower height, too. "For warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda or St. Augustine, the height should be three-quarters of an inch to 1 inch after being cut. For cool-season grasses, such as bluegrass or fescues, the height should be 2 inches to 4 inches high after being cut," Hicks adds.

For as long as people have built houses, theyve both left things in the walls and looked for secrets left behind. Sometimes the secrets the walls hold are sinister, unexplained, or just because of mother nature. Here are 10 weird things people have found in their walls.
Hundreds of years ago, when fear of witches was real and widespread, people would plaster a talisman called a witches bottle into the walls or floor of their home. In Watford, during the demolition of a former pub, construction workers discovered one such bottle. Within in were human teeth, fish hooks, shards of glass, and an unidentified liquid that may have been urine. (x)
Anyone who has stayed in an Airbnb or shady hotel has experienced the are there cameras here? paranoia. Heres a story to confirm all your worst fears. An Australian couple discovered recording equipment and cables in the walls of their home, leading to a shed owned by their millionaire landlord. In it was a leather recliner and wide-screen tv where hed sit and watch recordings of their most private moments. (x)
It felt like we were living in Satans lair, an apt description of a house where new homeowners, Ben and Amber Sessions once caught 43 snakes in a single day. Theres no way to rid the property of the snakes, as it sits on a snake lair. Non-poisonous garter snakes gather in the walls of the house to hibernate. The Sessions declared bankruptcy and now Chase Bank owns Satans lair. Seems fitting. (x)
William Wittman, 70, was remodeling his bathroom when a demolished wall revealed a 20-inch missile. The previous owners son served in the Korean War and brought home war memorabilia. Wittmans wife called local authorities, and the bomb squad collected and detonated the missile. (x)
Workmen removed a heating vent in a home somewhere in England (the exact location in unknown), and discovered a 100-year-old Ouija board in the wall, positioned upside down. Whether it was used to patch a leaky vent, or to appease an angry poltergeist is a secret that remained hidden in the wall. (x)
Divorces can become bitter and petty, and spouses hiding assets from each other is nothing new. But with one Vermont family, the subterfuge revealed the husbands undeniable talent when he recreated a Norman Rockwell painting and hid the original in the familys wall. (x)
Remarkably, this isnt the only story about bees forming hives in the walls of homes. With the future survival of bees under threat, beekeepers can make a living rescuing these wall dwellers. A bee rescuer came to the home and discovered a massive hive of 80,000 bees. He surmised the hive grew so large because of the number of flowers in the area and high temperatures. (x)
During the French Revolution, revolutionaries ransacked and looted the graves of monarchs. During the tumultuous times, the head of King Henry IV separated from his body. Almost 300 years later, a French man thought he found the mummified head in a wall in his attic. At first scientists agreed, but with further research it seems impossible to prove with 100% certainty to whom the head belongs. (x)
The flying mammals can fit into a space as small at half of an inch, so once they move into a home, theyre difficult to remove. When the Bocka family heard scratching and growling in their walls they investigated to find thousands of bats. A pest-control expert removed them from the property, and they moved into the home of the next-door neighbor. (x)
Homeowners Edie and Angie discovered a safe during a kitchen remodel. Within it, $50,000, a bottle of bourbon, and some tokens from the past, including a bingo card, a photograph of a tree, and the book A Guide for the Perplexed. Basically, the best find ever. But it took less than a week for the story to unravel. Chive co-founder John Resig admitted to staging the find, for no purpose than his own amusement. (x)
