Schindler Elevator Corporation Receives BOMA-NJ’s 2012 Alternate Energy Award - June 8, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    MORRISTOWN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Schindler Elevator Corporation, one of the leading global manufacturers of elevators, escalators and moving walks, is proud to announce that BOMA-NJ has awarded the company the 2012 Alternate Energy First Place Award for its solar installation project completed at its North American headquarters building in 2011. Bill Rafferty, manager, Building Services, Schindler, accepted the award at a ceremony held at The Newark Club on May 23rd.

The 250kw solar system, comprised of 1,236 photovoltaic solar panels, produces 310,000 kwh of electricity per year. Each panel generates 230 watts of renewable energy, and provides approximately 11 percent of the buildings total annual power consumption, enough to power more than 90 houses for one month. Since its installation, the system has offset the generation of close to 600,000 pounds of CO2, the equivalent of taking a family sedan off the road for almost two million miles.

Schindler has a dedicated website and a lobby kiosk that provides real-time data on the energy-savings, carbon reduction and environmental impact of the buildings new solar roof. The website serves as an educational tool to help visitors better understand the environmental benefits of the renewable energy source as well as the impact weather conditions have on the amount of power produced by the solar roof versus the utility grid.

    Other sustainable building improvements included:

Sustainability has always been a driving force behind everything we do for our customers, says Michael Landis, vice president, marketing at Schindler North America. As building owners ourselves, we understand that in order to adopt a truly sustainable approach, we need to show our commitment to that sustainable vision right here in our own facilities.

What to leave, what to take? - June 7, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Members of the South Dakota National Guard, most from the 139th Brigade Support Battalion, help the Brookings County Register of Deeds office move records books Monday afternoon, from the Brookings County Courthouse to the new records room in the Brookings City & County Government Center. The Guard members offered help during their two-week annual training, and their assistance came four days earlier than expected, keeping Register of Deeds Beverly Chapman on her toes./ Register of Deeds record books left the Brookings County Courthouse on Monday afternoon through a first-floor window. Photos by Jill Fier/Register City, county staffers prepare for The Big Move

BROOKINGS Anybody whos ever packed up a house and trucked everything across town or across the country knows what a pain moving can be.

Youre climbing out your comfort zone to jump into uncharted waters to say nothing of the time-consuming, very real work of sorting and packing a lifetimes belongings and then making the new home your personal space.

Now imagine youve been accumulating stuff for a hundred years, and instead of Mom, Dad and the kids youve got more than 60 people and more than a dozen different departments to get settled. That might give you some idea of the massive upheaval the workers at city hall and the courthouse are going through these days in preparation for the Big Move to the Brookings City & County Government Center.

As city manager and commission assistant, Jeff Weldon and Stephanie Ellwein have been handed the task of herding a gaggle of box-toting humans into a brand-new administrative center.

The actual physical move of county and city offices is scheduled to take place next week, from June 11-15, but weve already been at it for six months, Ellwein announced in mid-April. The courthouse clan knew theyd have their hands full, by virtue of the fact that they and their predecessors had been accumulating documents for a entire century and those would have to be dealt with.

The county department heads joined in a transition team to plan for the exodus.

    Destroying unnecessary records

Since April, Ellwein explained, courthouse staffers have been destroying duplicate records strictly according to state document destruction policies. Register of Deeds Beverly Chapman even had to get approval from Pierre to dump some of her old papers.

Ellwein says the county staffers even had to pull boxes of records from the crawl spaces below the courthouse. At the time, she said, they couldve used a couple of trained cave explorers.

MHI's First "Air-Carpet" for AIDA Cruise Ships - June 6, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

MHI received the order for the two cruise ships in November 2011. The 125,000 gross tonnage (G/T), 3,250 passenger ships will be the largest ever constructed for AIDA Cruises. Construction will take place at MHI's Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works, with deliveries scheduled for the spring of 2015 and 2016, respectively.

The air blown out by the MALS from the vessel's bottom produces small air bubbles which cover the vessel's bottom like an "air-carpet", which reduces friction between the hull and seawater during navigation. For the MALS, MHI uses special in-house developed high-efficiency blowers and state-of-the-art fluid simulation analysis tools to configure the arrangement of air outlet points to achieve maximum friction reduction at optimized air-blow volume. With these advanced innovations, MHI expects a 7% energy-saving effect. In 2010, MHI has already verified the performance of the MALS with an approximately 13% fuel consumption reduction during extensive sea trials on two module carriers which was the first commercial application of the MALS for the vessel in operation.

Following the successful launching of the MALS on module carriers, MHI has completed a newly developed concept design for bulk carriers, a major marine transportation vessel, that enables an approximately 25% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to conventional vessels, thanks to application of the MALS complemented with high-efficiency hull form and improved propulsion system. MHI will provide its conceptual design of this energy-saving bulk carrier for three grain carriers to be built for Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM), a major U.S. grain handler.

Given the current trend toward adoption of international marine transportation rules for reducing environmental burdens, coupled with continuing fuel price escalation, demand for more energy-efficient vessels is steadily increasing. In response, MHI aims not only to further strengthen its marketing activities for new MALS-installed ships such as module carriers, bulk carriers and cruise ships; it also intends to promote business in retrofitting MALS to existing vessels. Simultaneously, the company will conduct focused marketing activities for its environment and energy-saving related technologies, including licensing of MALS technologies, and also build up its engineering business through provision of eco-ship related technologies and increased sales of energy-saving systems.

FargoDome turf installation begins - June 6, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Work Begins

The project got underway today as the construction of the new storage pits began. It's a $3 million renovation that's taking place that will eventually have the Bison playing on the same surface that the St Louis Rams do.

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The countdown to the Bison football opener is 88 days away and when NDSU enters the FargoDome for its opener against Robert Morris they'll be playing on brand new field turf.

The project got underway today as the construction of the new storage pits began. It's a $3 million renovation that's taking place that will eventually have the Bison playing on the same surface that the St Louis Rams do.

Rob Sobolik FargoDome Executive Director: Right now you look out there and see, oh this is a concrete floor. That's kind of a bust. Where did that 3 million go? But, they're going to focus first on getting the new mechanical equipment that rolls the football turf in and off of the football out onto the field. Obviously, with a field that's 200 feet wide by 400 feet long, it doesn't come in one giant roll. It has to be transported. So, all of this stuff has to get connected, sewn together, and seemed together. It is a process and we expect over the next 10-14 days, that that's when people will start seeing what people always think of when they think of football turf in their mind; the actual green carpet going out onto the field.

Sobolik says July 10th the installation should be completed before the USA Wrestling Tournament. The Alerus Center is undergoing a similar renovation in Grand Forks.

'The Dream of all Italians': Gay couple unveil 'dead' artwork of Berlusconi (with his hand down his trousers) - May 30, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The title of the installation 'The Dream of All Italians' is what the former Italian premier called himself on the phone to one of his girfriends

Lying in a casket on a velvet carpet, at first glance you could be forgiven for thinking Silvio Berlusconi had passed away.

But in fact it's just a very realistic waxwork which pokes fun at the beleaguered former Italian premier and hints at his sins.

Entitled Il Sogno degli Italiani' or 'The Dream of the Italians', the controversial artwork has been created by artists Antonio Garullo and Mario Ottocento, the first ever married gay couple who tied the knot in Amsterdam in 2002.

Kim Kardashian Wears Low-Cut Sexy Dress at Kanye West's Cannes Film Premiere - May 25, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Cruel Summer, cute couple!

Kim Kardashian was the best plus-one ever for beau Kanye West at Wednesday's Cannes Film Festival premiere of Cruel Summer, the rapper's new art film/art installation.

PHOTOS: All the stars at Cannes

The reality star, 31, wore a jaw-dropping gold-and-cream Balmain dress with a plunging neckline and super-short hem, paired with sexy ankle boots. (The frock has already been worn by Katy Perry, Zoe Saldana and other stars.) West, 34, complemented his love of nearly three months in a white shirt, cream jacket, denim and black loafers.

According to a source, the couple "were inseparable" at the afterparty for Cruel Summer, one of the first projects of West's Donda creative firm. The twosome were "kissing in the back the whole time." (West's buddy Jay Z, sans wife Beyonce, showed up to support his frequent collaborator.)

4 Stocks Being Buoyed by Good Housing News - May 22, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Just as a rising tide floats all boats, positive housing reports lift not only homebuilders' stocks, but those of companies that are less visibly involved in a rebounding housing market, such as cabinet and flooring installers and roofing contractors. If you are still unconvinced that housing is making a comeback, read on for some uplifting news from some companies that can be counted on to perk up right alongside a brightening housing picture.

Masco (NYSE: MAS) is a global manufacturer of home products such as cabinets and plumbing products, as well as installation services. The company recently produced an improved first-quarter report after three years of depressed business activity. Importantly, the increase in revenue represents more business from an uptick in housing starts, particularly in North America, where the majority of the company's business is generated. Another good sign is that Masco was able to nearly double its operating profit margins year over year, from 3.3% to 6%.

Every new house needs flooring, and two companies have been nailing down some improving numbers so far this year. Mohawk Industries (NYSE: MHK) produces a large variety of flooring products for homes and businesses in the U.S., as well as covering the European residential market. Its recent earnings report showed a profit increase, rather than a decrease, for the first time in nearly a year. Although at least some of the profit increase was due to price increases, management reported increased sales in its Dal-Tile division.

Similarly, Interface (NYSE: IFSIA) , a carpet tile manufacturer, has also seen its business pick up this year, as it slowly claws its way back from a lackluster year. Although the company didn't make huge strides in the sales and revenue departments, it did report some very good news: Orders outstripped sales in the first quarter, resulting in a $13 million backlog for that time period.

To top it all off, Beacon Roofing (NYSE: BECN) has been doing pretty well, having enjoyed a lift from the especially warm winter. The ability to increase prices helped bump up the company's profit margins, and cash flow increased by 14% from this time last year.

Fool's takeFor Masco and Interface, a rebound in housing has had a direct effect upon their sunnier financial profiles already, and they should continue to experience an improving business climate as long as housing data remains positive. A better housing picture can only help Mohawk and Beacon, too, both of which will certainly be beneficiaries of new housing starts. If the recent auction of bundled foreclosure properties by Fannie Mae to large investor groups works out well, there should be plenty of work to go around in the renovation field, as well. When it comes to playing the housing investment market, these four companies are well worth keeping an eye on.

Housing-related stocks are not the only ones that are benefiting from a rebounding economy. Check out some investment ideas that may not have crossed your radar screen in our free report today!
