    Carpet Installers – Finding / Hiring a Professional Carpet … - January 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Carpet Installers are like most general contractors. There are good carpet installers, bad carpet installers, and those who call themselves carpet installers but in reality only know the basics of how to cut, seam, and lay carpet into a room. One of the best places to find a good carpet installer is through recommendation from friends and family who have used their services in the past.

You can also find Certified Carpet Installers at CFI Installers No matter where you find an installer, you still want to do your due diligence in checking their references, and hopefully seeing pictures of some of their work.

Installing carpet is not as easy as it appears. There are many types of backing materials that require different types of seaming tapes. There are also special techniques and tools used to cut different types of carpet. Perhaps one of the most difficult things to determine when looking for a good carpet installer is whether or not he is going to show up on time, and take the time and care to do your carpet installation in a professional manner. Everyone has had a contractor in the past who seemed like a good guy, but when it came down to it, he just didn't live up to your expectations.

Here are a few things to look for to help you find the best carpet installer for your carpet installation. First, talk to them on the phone. A good installer should be easy to reach, or return your phone call in a timely fashion. Second, when he arrives at your home to provide you with an estimate, go look in his vehicle. A carpet installer that takes care of his equipment, will more than likely take care of your home. A carpet installer who keeps empty cans, bottles, and just plain rubish mixed in with his tools is probably not the best installer in the business. Generally, sloppy is as sloppy does.

A good carpet installer will provide you with a written estimate including the amount of material you need to order, as well as an itemized list of charges such as stairs, thresholds, removal and disposal of old flooring, floor preperation, etc. If he offers padding with his installation be sure to get a sample of the exact pad he will provide. It is not uncommon for there to be some fudging on the pad. Would you know the difference between a 5lb, 6lb, or 8lb pad? Don't take their word for it. Get a sample.

Columnist: Heat from below will warm you all over - January 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dear Jim: My utility bills are high and often I'm chilly. I know electric resistance heating is expensive to operate, but I like the idea of infloor heating. Does it only work in tile or can it be used under carpet? - Ron A.

Dear Ron: In general, electric resistance heating is expensive to use for heating a house. This is why most homes which have all-electric heating use heat pumps, which can be several times more energy efficient than resistance heating. Resistance heating is basically a big toaster with a blower.

Electric infloor heating is technically no more efficient than an electric resistance furnace, but, because it improves comfort dramatically, it can be much less expensive to operate.

A house will use several percent less electricity for each degree the thermostat is set lower. With improved comfort from infloor heating, you should be able to lower the thermostat setting and not feel chilly. With infloor heating, you can have a separate computerized thermostat for each room so you can heat a room only when you need it.

Instead of heating the room air, a warm floor radiates heat upward to your body, making you feel warmer. When one's feet are warm, the entire body feels warm. Infloor heating reduces the extent of heat stratification where the hot air from a furnace naturally collects up near the ceiling.

Infloor heating is most efficient in a concrete slab or in a tile floor with high thermal mass, but some types are specifically designed to be used under carpeting, hardwood or laminate flooring. It can actually provide better comfort under carpet or hardwood because their low thermal mass allows the floor temperature to respond faster to the wall thermostat.

In a concrete slab or under a tile floor, electric heating cable is usually laid in a serpentine pattern in the concrete or thinset. For use with carpeting, thin mats or sheets are placed on the floor before the carpeting is laid. The manufacturer can calculate the amount your rooms need. Some of the systems are designed for do-it-yourself installation.

Dear Jim: My house is only about six months old. The interior side of the band joist feels damp, but I cannot find any leaks from the exterior. Where should I check to find the source of the dampness? - Kyle J.

Dear Kyle: You probably do not have a leak in the exterior envelope of your house. If you did, the band joist would be more than just damp and you would likely see a puddle somewhere.

Since your house is new, the moisture you feel on the interior surface is just from excessive humidity inside your house. New building materials often contain a lot of moisture and it can take a year or more to air out. Since the band joist gets cold, you notice the dampness there.

Columbia Public Library to install new carpet - December 21, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

COLUMBIA The Columbia Public Library will start installing new carpets throughout the building in early February.

The project is expected to be completed in April, library spokeswoman Mitzi St. John said.

The library's hours of operation will not be affected by the carpet installation, said Elinor Barrett, associate director of the library. Access to some sections of the library could be limited during phases of the project, she said, but that should not prevent library patrons from being able to check out materials.

So far, the audiobooks have been moved to the second floor to prepare for the project, and library staff has put up signs to direct readers to the new location.

"(It's) not a problem right now," St. John said. "We will do our best to make sure people can find what they need."

The current carpets, especially near walls, are wearing out and faded. Holes in the carpeting are visible near the library's entrance, and library staff has used duct tape to hold the carpet together in places.

St. John said that the carpeting was installed when the building opened in 2002 and that it has lasted as long as library staff expected.

The only areas that will not get new carpet are a single conference room and a back stairwell, St. John said.

Shrader: My annual gift has arrived - December 20, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

With the flourish of a FedEx stylus, my Christmas is complete.

As I sat here in The Free Press, slightly nauseous on glue fumes from the installation of our new carpet and struggling over a column that was not coming together, my package arrived. I was a little confused when the FedEx man came directly to me. Was there no one else available amidst the chaos of the office to sign for a package?

Oh! Its for me! I said, looking at it. Its never for me!

Pam, my second mom, had sent me my annual Christmas pajamas.

Its a tradition in her family that everyone gets pajamas for Christmas morning. The theory is, thats the present they open on Christmas Eve. Then everyone puts them on so when pictures are taken Christmas morning, no ones caught in last years ratty nightwear.

Even though I was never there for the Christmas morning unwrap extravaganza, Pam always included me in the tradition so that when I showed up for breakfast Id be in new pajamas like everyone else.

Its the closest thing to a Christmas tradition Ive had in years, and when Pam started asking about whether she should send a package to the office or to my house, I had a feeling thats what it would be. Its nice to still be considered part of the family. The note on the card even said from Mom and all the rest.

When youre single and your closest family is a 20-pound dog, Christmas morning can be difficult. And Im not one to overdo on Christmas for Millies sake. She came from the animal shelter where I was in Georgia and hasnt wanted for a thing since I plucked her out of that cage. Every day is a holiday for her.

Personally, Ive spent a number of Christmases with a number of families and at a number of events over the years. One of the first Christmases I was in Georgia, I went to a Christmas morning service that included a live nativity. Indoors.

Wisely, they had lined the aisles with trash bags before the animals made their debut. It may have been the three wise men who had the biggest impact on baby Jesus more than 2000 years ago, but the camel was the star of this show. He spit once he got up to the altar, causing a trio of pre-teen girls to scream in the middle of the service. And lining the aisles with plastic did turn out to be a good idea as his leavings needed to be cleaned up once the service was older.

Justin Bieber’s ‘Believe’ Red Carpet Live Stream: Watch Now - December 19, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

What's better than a front-row seat at a Justin Bieber concert? How about exclusive access to the red-carpet premiere of the Biebs' "Believe" documentary?

MTV is taking you there with the best seat in the house as Bieber, director Jon M. Chu, producer Scooter Braun, Usher and more answer your big questions during our online live stream, kicking off at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT exclusively on MTV.com. Have a question? Tweet it using the hashtag #AskBelieve.

MTV News' Christina Garibaldi will be joined by guest co-host Debby Ryan, of Disney's "Jessie," for all the action. And if we know Justin's fans, it's going to be pandemonium.

"Last time, when we did 'Never Say Never,' there was like, 4,000 fans outside screaming, going crazy," Chu previously told MTV News. " I'm sure there's gonna be some wild fan costumes and signs."

Lest we forget about graffiti artist Alec Monopoly, who will be creating an installation for the event using Bieber's Music Journals singles cover art as inspiration and infusing his own energy and emotions. The work will be painted live on-site and auctioned off for charity upon its completion.

Need more reasons to tune in? Chu will give you five.

"Believe" is what the director calls a "transition movie," giving audiences an inside look at Bieber's life as he records, tours and attempts to evolve under intense media scrutiny. "This was about him transforming and growing," Chu told MTV News.

"Believe," a follow-up to 2011's "Never Say Never," hits theaters on Christmas Day.
