Data* released today from HomeAdvisors third quarter Home Repair, Maintenance and Improvement Quarterly Trend Report showed an increase in maintenance and repair requests, accounting for 63 percent of the total requests nationally. Home improvement requests have decreased, accounting for 37 percent of the total requests nationally, and the most popular tasks included major room renovations such as kitchen and bathroom remodels. The report provides trends for home repair, maintenance, and improvement projects and is compiled on a national level as well as regionally for Chicago, Dallas, Boston, Denver, and Sacramento.
For the third quarter the most popular tasks requested included repairing electrical switches, replacing faucets and installing asphalt shingle roofing. Of the cities that data was collected from, Boston had the highest percentage (69%) of maintenance and repair requests and Denver received the largest increase of maintenance and repair requests, up 10 percent quarter-over-quarter.
Summer storms and warm temperatures may have contributed to the demand for exterior repairs such as repairing roofing and painting, but large room renovations are still valued, said HomeAdvisor CEO Chris Terrill. According to the data, bathroom remodels were the second most popular project requested, with kitchen remodels also in the top 10. Homeowners are still investing in cosmetic renovations, a fact that demonstrates stability in the home industry.
Home improvement project requests decreased eight percent for the third quarter. Of the cities data was collected from, Dallas had the highest percentage (44%) of home improvement requests. Most requested tasks in Dallas included remodeling a bathroom and installing porcelain and ceramic tile.
For interior design trends, the most popular room to remodel was the kitchen and the most popular color to use in the remodel was grey. Additionally, the most common types of countertop and flooring materials were marble and tile, respectively.
The data was collected from nearly 700,000 service requests received through HomeAdvisor.com from July- September 2014. The data was divided into two categories: additions and remodels or maintenance and repairs. Additional information was provided by HomeAdvisors Cost Guide and DesignMine tools.

Adi Asulin lives in a fabulous apartment on the top floor of a seven-story building in the Israeli town of Ra'anana, north of Tel Aviv. The entry hall is long and light. Windows open onto an enormous balcony, which wraps around three sides of her home. The decor is fresh and white.
"It's all made in China," Asulin says.
Not just made in China. Nearly everything the floors, the lighting, the furniture she bought in China on a 10-day shopping spree.
The day after Asulin and her husband got keys to the place, she got on a plane to Guangzhou, in southern China.
"An adventure!" she says.
The big appeal was the price.
"Forty, sometimes 50 percent off the prices in Israel," Asulin says.
The savings add up the bigger the job. Her new apartment had been a rental and needed a lot of fixing. But buying plus remodeling seemed beyond the family budget.
From a friend, Asulin heard about Israeli companies that arrange trips for individuals to buy directly from Chinese factories. She signed up, getting tickets and booking hotel rooms for herself, an architect and her dad for advice.
Once on the ground in Guangzhou, the trio were guided by the owner of the Israeli company and local staff. Their first stop was a flooring factory bigger than Asulin had ever seen half the size of her city, she says.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. Construction companies and contractors are gathering in Springfield this weekend to convince people to gut kitchens and bathrooms.
The Homebuilders Association of Greater Springfield is putting on its remodeling expo. The association told KOLR10 Friday there is more interest in the show this year than in the past.
Although the construction industry has not climbed back to where it was in the past, it's adding jobs again because people are more confident they can invest in new projects.
When times get lean like they did during the recession, homeowners in the Ozarks have to trim the fat.
Scott Bracy of Steward Construction is someone customers can call when they want a kitchen or bathroom makeover. Bracy said during the recession, remodeling was popular because people were staying in their homes. However, the scope of the projects was limited.
"During the recession there were lots of small remodels where now we're seeing lots of larger projects, just more money being spent by the consumer," Bracy said.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, sales at building and garden supply stores increased by nearly 7 percent from August 2013 to August 2014.
Charylce Ruth, the president of the homebuilders association, says these kinds of signs have brought businesses back out to shows.
Back in the heyday of course we were sold out and then everything got a little tighter and unfortunately some people went out of business, Ruth said. We're seeing people come back in the industry. Theyre more excited to be at a trade show. They have those advertising dollars."
Bracy said this year in particular has been a good one, helping him put more people to work.
