Vancouver Council approves motion to expand patios - July 30, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) Longer patio hours are on the way in Vancouver after the idea was unanimously passed by council.

Vancouver City Councilor Heather Deal says shes thrilled council passed the motion. We have a very lively patio culture in the City of Vancouver, but we still shut down earlier than many cities around the world, they all have to be abandoned by 11 p.m. During the Olympics we had them open a little later, many of them were open until 1 a.m., we gave it a trial run and it worked very well.

She says you may see small expansions of certain patios this summer. If theyre very good operators, we can look to expand them a small amount or perhaps have them stay open a little later. In the longer run, well be looking at the policies throughout the city and where throughout the city it may make sense to change them on a longer term basis.

Charles Gautier with the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association says its great news. I think itll likely be kinda customized to neighbourhoods rather than being a blanket-type of rules in place, just like theyve done before with other kinds of regulations, which I think is the best way to go.

Gautier says the changes probably wont come into play until next year, after city staff irons out all the kinks. Wed like to go back to our membership and find out what would appeal to them. I think there will be some areas with potential conflicts with residents, there may need to be less long hours, especially during the week.

Church Street parking spaces converted to mini patios with tables, gardens - July 30, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

If youre looking for a place to park your car on Church Street this summer, you could be out of luck. But if you are looking for somewhere to sit and enjoy the scenery, there will be more options.

Eight stretches of parking spaces in the Church-Wellesley village have been converted to mini patiosor parkletswith seating, tables and gardens. Each parklet eliminates up to seven parking spaces along the east side of the street.

Some of the parklets are already fully-outfitted, the rest will be completed this week and will remain in place until Halloween. After that, theyll be stored for the winter and re-installed come springtime.

The projecta collaboration between city councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam and the 519 Church Street Community Centrewas designed by urban design firm The Planning Partnership. Its part of an ongoing plan to spruce up the street ahead of the 2014 World Pride events and 2015 PanAm games.

We just are excited about being able to expand the public realm without having to rebuild the street, said Nancy Chater, a landscape architect with The Planning Partnership who is coordinating the project.

She said while feedback has been mostly positive as the parklets roll outpeople were already sprawled out on the benches and making use of the tables this weekendthere is some criticism.

People ask arent businesses concerned about losing parking? But it actually works in their favour to increase pedestrians.

Inspired by similar set-ups in Vancouver and the success of a parklet conversion along Yonge Street last year, the parklets will be scattered from just north of Wellesley Street to just south of Maitland street.

Costa Farms Shares Simple Tips For Decorating Patios, Porches, and Yards with Lush Ferns - July 24, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Miami, FL (PRWEB) July 24, 2013

All summer porches, patios and balconies are just a plant away from the classic, fresh touch theyve been craving. Ferns lacey, exuberant leaves demand attention in any space, and best of all, ferns are one of the easiest houseplants to care foryear-round.

According to Costa Farms, one of the largest growers of plants and flowers in North America, these versatile plants offer shade while sustaining their good looks all summer long, despite the sweltering heat. Ferns drastically improve ambiance when hanging on a porch, combined with pots of colorful annuals, or displayed in classic wire plant stands.

Ferns are the perfect accessory for the home and garden. Ferns leaves add texture, a pop of color, and clean the inside air at the same time, shares Justin Hancock, Costa Farms new Consumer Marketing and Digital Specialist and former garden editor at Better Homes and Garden.

Hancock divulges 11 simple secrets to incorporate the ever-green and ever-classic fern into any outdoor living space.

Mix Containers Ferns make a classic pairing with exuberantly colorful pots and flower-packed window boxes. Pop a large Boston fern into a tall container to add green lushness to a porch or entryway.

Go Classic Upright, elegant Kimberly queen fern makes an ideal container companion for a traditional-style seating area. Elegant, timeless patio seating is simple: grey all-weather woven-wicker chairs with white cushions, a wire chandelier, white finials, and a green fern. Its so simple and so classic!

Top a Table Make an instant impact by simply placing a pretty vintage tablecloth on a small table and topping it with a Boston fern. Ferns lush leaves add visual coolness to summer porches.

Add Height Ferns provide gorgeous backup color to a pair of vintage white concrete planters. An elegant Boston fern, set into an antique wire stand, adds height and texture where needed.

Adorn a Bench How easy is this? Just set a fantastic Boston fern on a stone bench in a woodland garden for instant ambience. This fern thrives under the dappled light from nearby trees.

Well-operated patios have mayor’s support for longer hours - July 24, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

Patios with well-behaving patrons could see their hours extended as soon as this summer if Vancouvers mayor gets his way.

A motion before council on Wednesday asks staff to work with the citys bars, restaurants and business improvement associations to figure out how to lengthen hours of operation for patios before the long sunny days are over.

I would love to see hours extended this summer for good operators, where theyre respecting the neighbourhood, or not impacting the neighbourhood at all, and can stay open a little later, said Mayor Gregor Robertson, who introduced the motion.

Right now its an 11 p.m. shutdown. Theres an immediate step that could happen with our successful patios.

Because changing the regulations surrounding licensing and hours would require a council decision and council adjourns Wednesday until the fall patio extensions could possibly be given out on an ad hoc basis, Robertson said.

During the 2010 Olympics patio hours were extended to 1 a.m.

We did extend hours for everyone a few years ago, but thats a lengthier council process, changing regulation, Robertson said.

The short-term step is looking at what we can do this summer for good operators to extend their space or hours and enable more patio use.

There are two categories of patios in Vancouver: large patios, which are normally licensed to serve alcohol, and small patios which have a few tables and chairs such as outside a caf.

As of 2012, 317 permits for large patios have been issued, along with 260 permits for small patios. Since January of that year, there have been 120 complaints lodged against businesses with food primary licenses, and 100 against liquor primary licences.
