    On Monday at the 2014 International CES in Las Vegas DISH Network made several big announcements, including a number of enhancements to its award-winning Hopper Whole-Home HD DVR platform. This included offering DISH subscribers the ability to record eight shows at once, which would all but eliminate channel conflicts.

    By pairing the Hopper with the new SuperJoey, a client that adds two network tuners to the Hoppers three native tuners, users can record even more programs and share them throughout the house via 801.11ac Wi-Fi. This provides users with the ability record eight shows simultaneously any four shows plus the four major broadcast networks, or provide users with the option to use the five network tuners to watch and record any five shows from any network at the same time.

    The Hopper continues to break new barriers in terms of accessibility, affordability and mobility, said Joseph P. Clayton, DISH CEO and president. You see that in the way in which DISH delivers more content and virtually ends channel conflict with SuperJoey. Our new Wireless Joeys and software-based Virtual Joeys make in-home installation options almost limitless. And, our app strategy continues to lead the way with best and most value-packed mobile entertainment experience in the market.

    In addition to affordability, DISH operates on three pillars in its strategy: Affordability, available everywhere, and ease of use.

    The American consumer only cares about three basic requirements for their video needs, said Clayton, at a CES press conference.

    The Wireless Joey system further provides users with options to stream recorded programming even where coaxial and Ethernet wiring is unavailable. The Wireless Joey installation includes an Access point along with the Wireless Joey Client, which creates its own dedicated 802.11ac Wi-Fi cloud within the home. The company noted that this does not degrade the Hoppers video quality and will even work in homes that do not have dedicated Internet access.

    In addition to going wireless, Joey is also going virtual, as DISH announced that it has developed a Virtual Joey software application that integrates the Dish Hopper HD-DVR experience directly on 2013 and 2014 LG Smart TVs. This app can be used in place of hardware-based Joey, which further increases the options where coaxial and Ethernet connectivity is not available. The wireless Joey allows users to install or bring their TV to hard-to-reach places such as mounting a set over a fireplace or bringing a TV into the back yard.

    DISH App Delivers Hopper Experience on LG Smart TVs - January 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--DISH Network L.L.C., a subsidiary of DISH Network Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH), today announced that it has developed a Virtual Joey software application that delivers the DISH Hopper HD-DVR experience on 2013 and 2014 LG Smart TVs. The app can be used instead of DISHs hardware-based Joey, increasing installation options where coaxial or Ethernet wiring may be difficult to access.

    Television placement is so often dictated by where the set-top box can be and where the wires are this new application literally unleashes the TV, said Joseph P. Clayton, DISH president and CEO. Together, we are giving our customers more choice and control over their entire television experience.

    By offering DVR capability directly through LGs Smart TV platform, DISHs Virtual Joey app gives consumers even more options to customize their viewing experience. Our collaboration with DISH is consistent with our philosophy of making Smart TV simple and more intuitive, said Sam Chang, vice president in charge of the LG Electronics Silicon Valley Lab, which developed LGs new webOS Smart TV platform.

    This new Virtual Joey app provides a nearly identical experience to the Hopper Whole-Home HD DVRs currently available to DISH customers. When loaded on an LG Smart TV, the app offers access to and control of the Hopper Whole-Home HD DVR -- including live TV, recordings and navigation of the electronic program guide. The software-based clients operate on users wireless or wired home networks.

    DISH expects to release the app in the first quarter of 2014.

    DISH will provide Virtual Joey demos on LG Smart TVs in the Las Vegas Convention Center in Central Hall at booth #8243.

    Phila. has record-low year in fire deaths - January 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    PHILADELPHIA For the second year in a row, Philadelphia recorded a modern-day record-low number of fire deaths in 2013.

    Fires caused 24 fatalities last year, Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers reported Thursday.

    The city recorded 25 deaths in 2012, seven fewer than the year before and less than half the 52 that occurred in 2005 and 2006.

    The new figures are a stark contrast to the fatalities suffered in Philadelphia in the 1970s and 1980s, Ayers said.

    Fatalities last topped 100 in 1989, Ayers said. The city's records date to the early 1950s.

    Ayers attributed the turnaround to improvements in the way buildings are made - including the required use of smoke alarms - enforcement of fire codes, and fire-prevention education.

    The Fire Department suffered one on-duty casualty in 2013: Capt. Michael Goodwin, 53, died in April battling a blaze in Queen Village. His death is recorded separately from those of the 24 civilians.

    Of the 24 deaths, six resulted from fires caused by electrical wiring.

    Flood list of do’s and don’ts from Sarawak Energy Berhad - January 1, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    KUCHING: It is crucial to stay away from power lines, electrical wires and installations in flooded areas, Sarawak EnergyBerhad (SEB) cautioned yesterday.

    SEB said it wished to advise members of the public to take extra precautions, before, during and after the flood recedes toavoid accidents and fatalitycaused by electrical hazards associated with flooding, according to chief operating officer Lu Yew Hung in a press statement yesterday.

    For houses anticipated to be affected by flood, the main switchboard should be switched off before water enters the house for the safety of the occupants, said Lu.

    Electrical appliances exposed to water can be extremely dangerous if re-energised without proper reconditioning or replacement. Flood damage to electrical equipment can sometimes be hidden; such as television sets which can cause electric shock even after they have been unplugged.

    It is important not to use appliances or motors that have gotten wet unless they are declared safe by a qualified technician, said Lu.

    When preparing for flood, the public affected must be determine if their home is in an area of potential flood risk. They are advised to check with the local authorities such as the District Office or Local Municipality or Drainage and Irrigation Department.

    The following is more advice and useful information from SEB:

    In any area where immediate flooding is anticipated, it is essential to shut off all electrical power by turning off the main switchboard;

    If you have time before you evacuate your home or business, move as much electrical equipmentas possible to floors or areasabove the anticipated flood level;

    If needed, engage a licensed contractor to remove fixed electrical appliances such as electric motor, fan and other heavy machineries from been affectedby the anticipated floods;

    Ethernet cable is used to connect computers to a network as well as to provide access to the internet from a DSL or cable modem. Ethernet wiring is the process of adding cable throughout a home or building to setup a network or connect to the internet. Installing ethernet wiring is similar to wiring a telephone or cable line, because the cable goes to one or more outlets in a room.

    Decide where the cable needs to be run. Ethernet cable can be wired into individual rooms to have a connection to the Internet. An outlet may need to be added, depending on how the cable is going to be wired into the room.

    Use a standard electrical box as the outlet for the ethernet cable. An electrical box is nothing more than a metal or plastic box which contains the cable which is covered by a faceplate connector. An electrical box can be installed in an unfinished wall as well as a finished wall.

    Run the cable from each outlet or room to a central location such as a basement. Ethernet wiring can be installed under the floor, on a ceiling in a basement as well as through a floor. Each of the ethernet connections to be used is going to need to connect to a hub of some kind.

    Use a router and connect each individual ethernet cable. A router is used to connect more than one device to a network or internet connection. This allows more than one computer to share the same internet address used by the DSL or cable modem.

    Label each cable that goes to a specific outlet in each room. Use a piece of masking tape to indicate which room the cable has been wired. This will make troubleshooting any problems that arise much easier.

    Connect the router to a DSL or cable modem. Once all of the wiring and connections have been made, connect the router to whichever type of modem is being used.

    Connector lights to be turned on by next summer - December 27, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    LOWELL -- Dozens of streetlights that run the length of the Lowell Connector installed during the summer have yet to be turned on, but officials say it's all part of the construction schedule.

    Though the streetlights are up, workers for the state project still have to run wiring and conduits along the roughly 2-mile roadway, according to the state Department of Transportation. Frozen ground over the winter will keep work stalled until somewhere around early April, department spokeswoman Sara Lavoie said.

    "There are few construction activities that can occur during the winter months (but) this is not one of them," she said.

    Construction will require occasional night work and is expected to be completed by next summer, according to Henri Marchand, assistant to the city manager.

    The lights were installed as part of a $2.5 million state safety-improvement project that also includes repairing or replacing existing lighting at the interchange of the Connector and Interstate 495. In all, 89 streetlights are included in the project.

    Wiring must also be inspected after installation before the lights can be turned on, Lavoie said.

    The project remains on schedule and on budget, she said.

    Wanaque awards contract for $262K for communications installation in new muni building - December 26, 2013 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Borough officials have chosen a familiar company to install communications infrastructure and equipment in the new municipal building that is currently under construction adjacent to the old hall on Ringwood Avenue. At its Dec. 9 meeting, the Borough Council passed a resolution to award the state contract for the job to RFP Solutions of Woodbury in the amount of $262,484.

    Borough Administrator Tom Carroll said that RFP Solutions been has providing the borough with phone system services for 10 years and has a variety of experience in the field.

    "RFP has worked with many different courts and police," he said. "They know exactly what is needed."

    Carroll said that he met with Police Chief Tom Norton and several other police officers to discuss departmental needs for telephones, audio, closed circuit television, door locks, and data networks. As a group, they determined what communications equipment will be required in the new building.

    "This includes all of the computer wiring, intercom, phones, and 27 cameras," he said. The cameras will provide both internal and external views. RFP will also install a sound system in the council chambers and television monitors throughout the building. The Police Department will have recording systems installed in two interview rooms.

    Councilman Ed Leonard asked for clarification regarding the type of data networks installed by RFP.

    "Does this include servers?" he said.

    "No," answered Carroll. "Thats a separate contract." He explained that in terms of this contract, data-network equipment will control the door locks, telephones, audio equipment, and cameras.

    "Its not the server that handles our email, payroll, or anything else thats already here," Carroll said. He added that the server managing those aspects of communication in the current borough hall will be replaced next year, before the completion of the new building.

    "We already replaced the work stations," Carroll said. "So when everythings ready to move (to the new borough hall), well just take the new stuff with us and it will all be done."
