Dear Ed: My New Year's resolution this year is to improve the plumbing in my home. The plumbing system itself is solid; I'm looking to make a fixture change since they are all outdated. But like most families, money is tight this time of year. If I can pick one plumbing fixture to change, which one would you recommend? Todd, Ohio

A: From what I've seen as a plumber, I have to say that a new kitchen faucet can really make a splash when it comes to upgrading your plumbing system. Installing a kitchen faucet is usually a very affordable plumbing project, and it can change the look and feel of the entire kitchen. Here are three popular kitchen faucet choices:

Pull-down or pull-out spray head faucets. These faucets have built-in spray heads, making cleanup a breeze since they are so easy to operate. Also, the sleek design can really clean up the look of your kitchen.

Filter-type kitchen faucets. If you're looking to have a kitchen faucet that can double as a beverage faucet, installing a faucet with a built-in filter system is a clear choice.

Touchless-style kitchen faucet. This is one of the best types of kitchen faucets if you like to do a lot of cooking. With a touchless faucet you can prepare food and turn the faucet on and off without touching any handles. A touchless kitchen faucet can also conserve water because with just one wave, you can save!

Plumber: Faucet update helps start the year with a splash

A woman refused to pay her water bills when they turned up hundreds of dollars more than she usually pays.

The city turned her water off, so she called a plumber to find the problem.

When she still couldn't get a response from the city, she turned to Action 9 investigator Jason Stoogenke for help.

"I got quite a few of them bills," said Angie Wallace. "I'm like, 'hold up.'"

Wallace's water bills were always around $50 per month.

But then July's bill was $324, August's was $672, September's was $268, October's was $284, November's was $153 and December's was $147.

She refused to pay most of it and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Department shut off her water.

"Man, I was really boiling," Wallace said.

When Action 9 was in her home, there was no water dripping or toilets running, which are common reasons for high water bills.

Another reason is a leak, which if it's on the homeowner's side of the meter, he or she is on the hook for the bill.
