Plumbers work as part of a construction team and work closely with pipefitters and steamfitters on large-scale jobs and industrial projects. They may install plumbing systems in new construction or they may be called out to fix a problem with an existing system.

However, plumbers may also work on projects by themselves. They respond to homeowner calls and businesses about leaks or blockage that affects the plumbing in the building and calls about the installation of large appliances such as laundry machines, dishwashers and garbage disposal systems.

Since 1963, more than 28 billion feet or about 5.3 million miles of copper plumbing tube was installed in U.S. buildings. Thats equivalent to a coil wrapping around the Earth more than 200 times. The current installation rate now exceeds a billion feet per year.

The amount of plumbing work needed in the United States put plumbers at risk of toxic asbestos exposure because of a number of asbestos-containing products they use and repair. Most of these parts and products were manufactured between the 1940s and 1970s.

In 2018, an International Journal of Epidemiology study highlighted former plumbers as one of the highest-risk groups for asbestos-related diseases. Plumbers are almost 16 times more likely to develop mesothelioma than the general population, according to data gathered by British researchers.

As plumbers cut, saw and sand asbestos paper, drill asbestos-containing products to fit certain dimensions, saw and join pipes or sand down block insulation, asbestos fibers are released into the air. Once these fibers are inhaled, some can remain in a human body for its lifetime. The accumulation of fibers can cause inflammation and scarring that may lead to the development of mesothelioma cancer and other asbestos-related illnesses.

Asbestos was commonly used in insulation of pipes, boilers, ducts and tanks for its fire and heat resistant properties. Pipes are among the most common product that plumbers come into contact with. They cut, saw and drill pipes to specific lengths and sizes to fit certain dimensions of an area in a house or building, which disturbs asbestos fibers used in the products insulation and releases them into the air where they can be inhaled.

Plumbers, pipefitters and steamfitters also face asbestos risks by handling pumps, valves and gaskets that contain asbestos. Pumps and valves are installed to pressurize and circulate water and other fluids, while gaskets are used inside of these pumps and valves to prevent leaks. Over time, these components can wear out and may need to be replaced. When plumbers remove or replace these asbestos-containing products, the fibers are frequently released into the air where they can be easily inhaled by workers.

In a study published in 2007 in The Annals of Occupational Hygiene, epidemiological data suggests a significant risk of asbestos exposure to maintenance workers, including plumbers, who through their work may disturb asbestos-containing materials. It also found that plumbers working in areas which had supposedly been stripped of asbestos just prior to their starting work suggested that poor removal, clean-up and clearance practice presents a significant risk of asbestos exposure to plumbers.

The asbestos exposure of industrial plumbers was measured using personal passive samplers developed at the Health and Safety Laboratory. The results of the TEM (transmission electron microscopy) analysis of the passive samplers showed 62 percent of workers were exposed to a significant amount of asbestos fibers in Round 1, and 58 percent were exposed in Round 2. The estimated lifetime risk of death from asbestos-related cancer for an exposure from age 20 for 40 years would be 68 per 100,000.

In another study of 7,121 members and retirees of the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters in California, 16 were found to have died from mesothelioma between 1960 and 1979.

In a preliminary case-control study, welders, auto mechanics and plumbers had an increased rate of asbestos-related lung cancer. A cross-sectional study found plumbers and pipefitters who were exposed to asbestos had an excess of radiographic abnormalities.

In a survey to determine whether there were previously unrecognized sources of asbestos exposure in British Columbia, incident mesothelioma cases and population-based controls were interviewed about their occupational histories and asbestos exposures. Plumbers and pipefitters were among the occupations that were at an elevated risk of asbestos exposure.

Jurors awarded former Union Carbide employee Larry Stewart $2.2 million in economic damages, $500,000 in non-economic damages and $6 million in punitive damages, and awarded his wife $500,000 in non-economic damages after finding Union Carbide exposed him to asbestos during his career as a plumber.

Stewart worked as a plumber from 1968 until he was diagnosed with mesothelioma in 2007. He worked on large projects and was apparently exposed to asbestos contained in joint compound used by drywallers, who put up walls as soon as the plumbers finished their work. Stewart claimed that sanding by drywallers created dust that would fill several rooms at a time and he didnt think it was harmful because he never received any warning.

Roger Mauro and his wife won a Mauro $7,500 in compensation for damages for emotional distress related to his fear of developing cancer. Mauro worked at Ancora State Psychiatric Hospital as a repairman and a plumber-steamfitter, and from 1964 until the mid-to-late 1970s, he was exposed to pipe covering, asbestos cement and other asbestos-containing materials. He also was exposed to asbestos when he removed old insulation material and installed new insulation.

Mauro did not have mesothelioma or another asbestos-related disease when the case went to trial hence his low compensation but he was informed by a doctor that he had bilateral thickening of both chest walls and calcification of the diaphragm.

Celotex Corp., GAF Corp., Union Carbide, Johns Manville, Pacor Inc., Owens-Illinois Co., Garlock, Inc., Kentile Floors, Certainteed Products Corp., Fibreboard Corp/Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp., Pittsburgh Corning Corp., Eagle-Picher Industries, Inc., Keene Corp. and Kaiser Gypsum Co. have been involved in asbestos litigation for exposing plumbers.

John Crane and The Flintkote Company also manufactured asbestos products used by plumbers.

One of the main benefits of modular carpet tiles is the design flexibility they offer. Not only are carpet tiles available in a much wider range of patterns, colors and designs than other flooring types; they can also be installed in a variety of different patterns and layouts, to add an additional design flair to even a subtle choice of carpet tile.

We're looking at several different installation pattern options, for both modular carpet squares and carpet planks - as different shapes of carpet tiles offer different installation patterning opportunities.

The installation options for square carpet tiles are fairly limited, but offer the opportunity to create patterns and designs that can't be achieved with broadloom carpet. Essentially, you can either rotate tiles or offset them to create patterns.

This is the simplest carpet tile installation pattern: all of your carpet tile squares are installed in the same orientation, in neat rows and columns.

The rows of your carpet tile squares are off-set by half a tile's width, creating a brick-like pattern.

This is similar to the brick layout, but rather than off-setting each row by half a tile's width, it's each column that's off-set by half a tile, creating a vertical brick-like pattern.

In this layout, carpet tiles are installed in neat rows and columns, but each tile is rotated 90-degrees compared with the tile before it. This is a popular installation choice for plain colored tiles, as it adds a subtle - but still noticeable - pattern.

Your carpet tile squares are laid with no consideration for orientation or direction of tile patterns. If your tiles have an abstract, organic pattern this can work well, but is less suited to tiles with a more rigid, geometric design.

With rectangular carpet planks you can recreate several of the installation patterns that can be created with square tiles, such as monolithic, ashlar and brick layouts. However, the rectangular plank shape adds greater patterning possibilities. The following layouts can't be recreated with square carpet tiles.

Pairs of carpet tiles are installed at right-angles, to create the instantly-recognizable herringbone arrowhead. This is a popular installation choice for carpet planks, as it creates a distinctive pattern.

Carpet tile planks are installed in interlocking groups of four, so that the pattern resembles a woven pattern. Like herringbone, it creates a very distinctive pattern on the floor, making it a popular choice as a way to add design flair.

As well as laying carpet tiles in different patterns, there are other ways to introduce creativity into your flooring layout.

Mixing in carpet tiles in a contrasting color or pattern at random throughout your floorplan is a great way to add color and interest into your flooring design in small bursts. You may opt for a neutral color for the majority of your carpet tiles, but use accent tiles to add in a bit of branding or personality to the installation.

Alternatively, you could choose two different - co-ordinating or contrasting - carpet tile designs, and mix-and-match across your floorplan. This will strengthen the visual impact of your flooring, and deliver even greater creative freedom.

Using different styles of path lights in the same scheme can help you avoid the good little soldier look. Be sure to clean the lamp surfaces and check for burned-out bulbs at least once a year, and relocate the stakes if plant growth has blocked their light output.

Path lighting is something that is rarely done well. Whether you opt for inexpensive stakes or pricier fixtures, placement is critical. Think of them as gentle hints for where to go next, not outlining tools or runway lights for an airplane landing. Fewer is usually better.

Path lights are visual aids in a dark space, but they also add color and texture if you place them near interesting plants. This way, you can retain pieces of your gardens charm long after the sun sets.

Seating areas benefit from moon lighting or lighting installed high overhead because there are no harsh bulbs at eye level and it creates a cozy, intimate feel. No one likes to feel as if theyre on stage when theyre sitting outside, says MacMorris.

The pergola in the background is lit brightly because its viewed from the house most of the time; however, it can be made more inviting with a dimmer switch.

The hardscaping in this outdoor kitchen is lit with outdoor LED tape, which is a flexible strand of LEDs encased in silicone and designed to keep moisture out. Although the back is adhesive, the tape requires support from clips to stay in place. You need some electrical experience if you want to install this yourself.

This scene is lit with the entire view in mind, not just the water feature. Uplit trees across the viewing area provide balance; the designer used more lumen intensity and a wider lamp spread on the tree in the middle, which is the focal point. A bonus tip for lighting evergreens: Using a blue lens intensifies their green color.

Balance is important when youre lighting a homes exterior. Lighting only the house can look unnatural even bleak but uplit trees and statuary add depth and softness.

Shadow can be just as interesting as light. The spotlights on the front of this house were placed very close to the foundation so that the light would catch the edges of the beautiful stonework and create an intricate shadow pattern. To avoid a dead dark spot at the peak of the roof, the designer placed one spotlight on a stem in the flower bed (at left) that sends light all the way to the top.

Loved the food very flavorful and different from other restaurants. Loved the frozen margaritas! Great service!!!! Maybe dim the lighting?

During the training break, me and other colleagues decided to have a lunch at this place. The outside of the cafe looked unkempt and not welcoming. However, after the entering the place, it was colorful interior and smiley hostess. We got the table in seconds and we're ready to order. The waitress was nice and patient with a group of 6 people. Everyone alternated their order and the waitress did not have any concerns- that was nice!The order came fast. We all were surprised by the portions- they were huge! No one finished their dish lol I liked the food, fast service and friendly prices. The minuses would be that the place wasn't very clean and we waited for our bills. also, they didn't have cups for tea. I got my tea in the plastic cup and it was warmed by microwave... I didn't like it.But in the end, if you need quick bite and you have cravings for the Mexican food- stop here.

Mexican is one of my favorite meals to have out, in particular I enjoy the ambiance. Here you will find exactly that, a bright and cheerful spot with friendly, well dressed staff. There is an amazing variety of dishes on offer, generous portions, and great warmed chips and salsa for your appetizer. Take some time to appreciate the decor which consists of hand painted chairs, walls, and wall decor. A true taste of Mexico right her in Naptown!!!

Apparently a converted Dairy Queen, Los Patios has a very unique layout and decor. The first thing you notice when you walk in Are the various colors of the tables and chairs. Separating the dining area and the kitchen is a big wall that was obviously the counter of the DQ.The prices are good in the specials are even better. They have beer and margarita deals for every day of the week. As for food, I ordered the wet burrito and it came out covered and delicious cheese, just as promised. While it was not the Burrito Gigante, it was still gigantic.The service was good and the orders were accurate. I would definitely return if I were in the area and craving Mexican food.

We were excited to try Los Patios. Since their parking lot is often full during dinner, we figured it had to be good. Other Yelpers photos of the menu helped us choose our meals and I was tasked with calling in our order. I was told our order would be ready in 10 minutes. Pretty good for a Friday night!After paying for our 3 meals, the guy comes back and says they are out of hamburgers. So they couldn't make the kids meal that was ordered for our son. He tried talking us in to getting something else, but there wasn't anything else our son wanted. We already knew that now we had to stop at another restaurant on the way home to get our son dinner, so we really just wanted our refund and to get going. He finally refunded in cash and we left. Needless to say, dinner was lukewarm when we finally got home. Price wise, it's pretty good for the amount of food you get. Hubby and I both got chimmichanga's, me chicken and him beef. He didn't care for the beef at all. The meat was like the "ground hamburger" in Taco Bell tacos. (Eww) The chicken was ok. Nothing spectacular and in need of some seasoning. The refried beans were dry and pastey. Maybe it tastes better when it's fresher. It definitely didn't seem fried in the least, either.

My take out experience at Los Patios was probably one of the weirdest ordering and Mexican food experiences I have ever had. I tried to order two "super" burritos and was told they they don't have super burritos. I then explained that I am just looking for a burrito with everything inside (sour cream, meat, guacamole, and etc). The employee still seemed a little puzzled but she took my order. When we finally received our food and opened up our to go containers the burritos were weirdly not wrapped in a tight manner. Instead our burritos resembled soggy tortillas with a lumpy layer of food underneath. (See attached photo) And all of the condiments were given to us in lots of little containers and not inside the burrito like I requested. I am still pretty confused by the whole thing. I was on a road trip and I really needed a meal that was conducive to the car hence my to go burrito order.... All in all, the food was okay and the flavor was okay as well. Maybe the term "burrito" is not a universal term after all.

If you add on appetizers and dessert it can be pretty hefty.The buffet is pretty big with all the basics and more. Plenty of meat, chicken and... shrimp!! Tortillas, taco shells and even a taco salad shell if you want to make your own. The best part of the buffet! All the extras like guacamole, sour cream and dessert are included. Pretty good flan and churros for dessert. Overall, you can't beat that price for the amount of food you get! Such a steal!

Sorry guys, this is not a fan favorite. I live really close and I noticed the parking lot is usually busy on the weekends so we gave it a shot... we won't be back. The atmosphere wasn't very friendly, the food was just so so and with there being two other Mexican restaurants within a stones throw, it doesn't make this one worth it.

We came in from outside Chicago and were staying at a local hotel. Drove past this place at 9:30 and it was packed. Got margaritas on special and split the Patio fajita special. More than enough for two to share. Food and service was AMAZING!!!!

I'm giving one star because i literally had to do so or I wouldn't be able to write a review. We ordered take out. there was some weird stuff in our tacos, and I went for horchata and it was like dirt water, SOOOO GROSS. don't go.

It was a bit on the plain side, but I still really enjoyed it.I finished my meal with the fried ice cream. It was a large portion and the perfect ending to a great meal!Our service was excellent. They kept our drinks full. The drinks came in larger than average cups which was nice. The gentleman at the cash register seemed genuinely interested in our dining experience. The was refreshing.We will come back here.

This is such a great place for a quick sit down meal. We were seated immediately, even though it seemed like it would be super busy from the parking lot. We got our chips and salsa within about 1 minute. After ordering, I literally got up to the use the restroom and when I returned about 2 minutes later, the food was at the table. My husband ordered arroz con pollo and it was so well made. He also got a small salad that was only $2.75 and it was HUGE! I ordered a chicken quesadilla and it was so filling and yummy. The queso was thick and creamy, like Mexican queso should be! When we received the check, it came out to less than $25 for two people... and we ordered an extra salad and the queso dip. We even had food to take home. This place is great!!! Do not let the other reviews on yelp scare you. It was quick, courteous, delicious and worth it! Yummy!

I drive past this Mexican restaurant several times a week on my way home from work. Decided to have lunch here on our days off work the week before Christmas. There was so much hustle and bustle with several large work parties that I thought we'd get lost. But nope - we were so well taken care of that we booked a reservation to have a family dinner 2 weeks later. Had great service and huge portions for the pricing. Servers had loads of patience for our party of 8 adults plus 5 small kids !Would love to see a more authentic chopped guacamole instead of the creamed up version.

Amazing!!! Totally recommend this restaurant!!! Food was fresh and hot and full of flavor. Service was perfect!

Well I went back here after a few months and it was no better than the first time. Good was pretty bland. I could make better tacos at home honestly. Will not go back.

I always hate giving the two-star review, but "Meh. I've experienced better." really sums up my experience. Understand, they have been open less than a week. However, I read the reviews of their Danville location and was very excited for tasty food. This was not tasty. Everyone at our table agreed that the food did not taste bad, it just did not taste like anything. We were pretty sure the ground beef was devoid of even salt. We doused all our food in salt, hot sauce, and salsa. I am chalking this up to being new and plan to go back in a month or two. There are some bright spots:- service is friendly- the space is pretty and happy, with lots of bright colors- while the view of SR 67 is not ideal, they do have a newly built patio- the prices are comparable to other Mexican places in the area- they sing and give you a dessert for your birthday- tons of parking
