Should I test my home for mold?

In general, it is not necessary to test for mold. Both the CDC and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) do NOT recommend testing. No matter what type of mold is present, you should clean it up and make efforts to prevent further mold growth. Since the effect of mold on people can vary greatly, the presence of mold in the home does not imply a health risk.

The key to mold prevention is moisture control. Mold will not grow if moisture is not present.

Tips for mold prevention:

When cleaning up more mold than you might find in a corner of a bathtub or on a piece of old bread- Wear Personal Protection: Gloves, Mask and Goggles. Avoid touching mold or moldy items with bare hands you may want to wear gloves. Long gloves that extend to the middle of the forearm are recommended. Avoid breathing in mold and getting mold in your eyes you may want to wear a mask and goggles.

Within 48 hours, dry non-moldy wet materials to prevent mold growth. Clean moldy materials. Mold can be removed from hard surfaces by wiping or scrubbing with water and detergent. Dry the surfaces quickly. If you choose to use bleach to clean up mold, mix 1 cup of bleach with 1 gallon of water. Never mix bleach with ammonia. Open windows and doors and turn on the vent in the bathroom to increase ventilation.

If you think your children are sick because of exposure to mold at school or you are sick because of exposure to mold at work, first consult your health care provider to determine the appropriate medical action to take. Secondly, you should notify your building maintenance personnel so the mold can be cleaned up and the moisture issue can be addressed.

Vinyl soffit is designed to be easily installed lengthwise from wall to fascia. Soffit panels are similar to vertical siding. Manufacturers produce both solid and vented panels, as well as combinations of the two.

How Much Does Lowes Vinyl Siding Installation Cost?

Unlike aluminum and vinyl siding, which usually goes directly over most homes existing wood siding, Hardie Plank is a genuine exterior building product, so all the present siding needs to be removed down to the original substrate.

Once the old siding has been removed, regardless if its vinyl, aluminum or wood, a thorough inspection is performed making sure there is no rot, water or termite damage. If any bad wood is found it is replaced with exterior grade CDX plywood sheathing.

Once the structure has been determined serviceable, Hardie Wrap, an engineered vapor barrier is applied to the entire exterior. By taping every seam this not only helps seal up drafty areas, it allows the house to breathe properly from the inside out by allowing the expulsion of excess moisture, and prevents water from infiltrating from the outside.

Next a waterline level is taken to determine the high and low point to ensure an even siding application all the way around the home. A small strip known as a kick-out row is fastened to the wall creating the proper angle for the overlap of each plank as its applied to the wall.

Inside corners can be made by from bending PVC Coated Aluminum or by using Hardie Board Trim, to achieve the desired look. Outside corners, depending on the profile can be made either mitered for the James Hardie Artisan Panel, woven for Hardie Shake or a traditional to suit any profile the customer desires.

Hardie Plank is then blind nailed so that no visible nails are seen or left exposed to the elements. Each plank is butted the same way wood clapboard would be installed.

Unlike vinyl siding that allows water to get behind it, especially around windows and doors, relying solely on house wrap to channel water. James Hardie Siding requires flashing under each and every butt joint. This will channel any water out and down into the row below.

Houses with low foundations where the siding is less than the ideal 6 inches from the grade require a composite or aluminum skirt board. This can be made to match either the trim or the siding color.

Roof to Wall Transitions are handled much in the same way. Composite or aluminum trim boards are applied 2 inches above the roof line to prevent the siding from ever wicking.

When it comes to your homes window trim, several options are available. If your existing window & door trim is remaining, it can be wrapped in custom formed PVC Coated Aluminum, then sealed by using an exterior grade color matched caulk.

Using Hardie Trim Boards a variety of looks can be achieved, from Historic Window Trim with a traditional sill nose, or crown headers. An apron can be added to replicate an old-style window trim, as well as the ever popular craftsman by picture framing the opening in widths ranging from 2 to 5 inches.

Mounting blocks are then installed around any hose bibs that protrude through the siding, with a inch drip cap on top. Blocks can be made to match either trim or siding color. The same is case with all bathroom and dryer vents. As well as all lighting fixtures. Custom mounting blocks can also be made to accommodate mailboxes, flag poles and house numbers.

Special care is taken around masonry transitions. Aluminum flashing is installed to avoid moisture absorption along water tables or sills, and composite trim or aluminum flashing at all vertical stone and brick walls.

EverLog Siding comes pre-finished and is packaged in durable crates. A forklift is required to unload crates from the trailer. Contact EverLog Systems for crate weight and forklift recommendations, Also reference our EverLog Siding crate handling and siding removal instruction manual. The crates should be placed on level ground with 24 blocks under the front to provide a slight tilt from front to back.

Partially remove top screws using T-30 bit included with delivery, carefully set lid aside. Partially remove front scr3ews on both right and left end panels, fully remove screws from front bottom front panel and reserve for re-assembly. Carefully lay front panel down.

Using two people carefully tilt siding up and lift on edge, always carry panels on edge. Place packaging foam in a safe place until crate is empty at which point the foam can be placed back into the crate before closing crate up in reverse order of disassembly. Crates containing corners or other custom components may have additional bulkhead screws that need removed prior to removing face panel.

Installation requires a few common tools. A four and one-half inch electric angle grinder and accompanying four and one-half inch masonry blade is recommended for most if not all cutting. A hole-saw may also be needed for round cuts such as dryer vents or plumbing penetrations. A high-speed cordless drill or two with extra batteries is also recommended. EverLog Systems recommends using GRK Cabinet Screws along with the companion HSS Bit Holder, also made by GRK to ease installation.

As with any construction task, proper safety and protection equipment such as safety eye and ear protections, respirators and gloves should be used at all times when handling and cutting concrete materials.

Prior to installing any siding, outside and inside corners need to be installed first. Our corner posts come in stock ten-foot lengths so most corners will need to be cut to fit on site prior to their installation. After measuring the short and long lengths, mark the corner with a speed square with the length or angles needing to be cut. Care should be taken when planning cuts and strap locations. The angles can then be cut using the angle grinder.

Once the corner is cut and fits nicely, unfold the embedded installation straps and securely fasten the corners to the wall using two screws per strap.

After cutting and installing corners youre ready to begin horizontal siding installation. Install and secure HSS Bit Holder into the drill, refer to GRK instructions for the bit holders adjustment instructions. Place Cabinet screw onto bit holder and press against panel flange, the magnetic bit holder will secure the screw during driving.

Using a high speed setting, drive the self-tapping screw into the center of the flange, a minimum of two inches from the end. Speed should be reduced just before setting screw snugly against the siding flange taking care not to over-tighten. Repeat process taking care to hit the stud locations. Panels should be spaced one eighth inch apart end to end and end to corners to allow for expansion and contraction. All butt joints should be factory end to factory end with cuts placed against corners or other trim.

Because EverLog Siding comes in stock twelve-foot lengths it will need to be cut to fit. Measure length of siding needed, again allowing for one eights inch gaps on ends. Mark length needed on siding, a template tool can be made to automate markings for square or pitched cuts. Mark the siding with a clearly visible line. Place blocking under the siding to allow four and one-half inch masonry blade to penetrate through the siding. Once safety equipment is in place and clear of obstructions, begin cutting siding. Hold the angle grinder securely and parallel to the cut, after cutting brush dust from the surface of the siding using a soft bristled nylon brush. Each profile of siding is cut using similar methods.
