The right sidewalks, walking paths and outdoor attractions in a city could save your life, according to Dr. Richard Jackson, one of four doctors and architects coming to the Twin Cities to spread the gospel of healthy living through urban design.
Jackson, who hosts a PBS series on the topic, is among a growing number of researchers who believe the design of cities can impact residents' health -- everything from obesity to lung disease. A city's design also may influence mental health concerns such as depression and isolation.
What's more, making spaces that once were mostly frequented by drivers more accessible to pedestrians, bicyclists and residents can be good for business.
"We need to rethink how we zone places," said Jackson, pointing to the example of Sacramento, Calif., which is adding residential apartments to downtown hotels and state office buildings. "You can't have a lively downtown if everyone goes home at 5 o'clock and no one is around on weekends. Businesses can't survive, they can't thrive if that happens."
The four like-minded experts -- including two San Francisco-based architects and a medical practitioner turned public health attorney -- are coming to St. Paul in May to offer their thoughts on the subject.
The St. Paul Riverfront Corp.'s "Placemaking Residency" will host Jackson, Dr. Anthony Iton and two architects from Gehl Studio from May 11 to May 15.
HealthEast is the lead sponsor among 30 groups helping to fund and organize what amounts to their "residencies" with the city. It will culminate with the Great River Gathering on May 14 at the St. Paul RiverCentre on Kellogg Boulevard.
The banquet, now in its 21st year, draws together St. Paul's civic leaders, policymakers and the private sector to celebrate the capital city. Jackson will deliver the keynote address.
The hope is that the discussion will be more than academic.
The St. Paul Riverfront Corp. last year hosted Colombian urban planner Gil Penalosa, whose international "8-80" cities initiative has become the blueprint for St. Paul's $42 million neighborhood improvement fund of the same name.

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - ?Here is a list of some road projects from around the Heartland.

Fournis par AFP Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga (L) meets with Okinawa Governor Takeshi Onaga (R) in Naha, Okinawa prefecture on April 5, 2015
Shinzo Abe's right-hand man on Sunday urged the governor of Okinawa to concede in a lingering row over the construction of a US air base ahead of the Japanese prime minister's visit to Washington later this month.
The base's construction, first mooted in 1996, has been stymied by local opposition from islanders who say they bear a disproportionate burden in hosting more than half of the 47,000 US service personnel stationed in Japan.
In the latest twist in the two-decade row, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told Governor Takeshi Onaga: "We hope to get your understanding on the plan... for maintaining the deterrent power of the Japan-US alliance."
However, the Okinawan governor countered that while he understood the importance of the alliance with the US, any national security plan must have the Japanese people's support.
"Okinawa never voluntarily offered (land) for bases. I'm convinced that it is impossible to construct a new base," Onaga said, referring to a plan to replace the urban Futenma Air Base with one on a rural coastline at Nago.
After the meeting, he told reporters: "I will never step back on the base issue," criticising the government's top-down approach.
Hundreds of anti-base protesters rallied outside the hotel in Okinawa's capital Naha where the talks took place, holding banners that read "rescind the relocation plan!"
The anti-base camp -- who want the base off Okinawa -- struck a blow late last month when Onaga said coral just outside the permitted zone at the site on the island's northeast coast had been damaged and demanded a halt to the work.

Q. When I pulled up my rug for cleaning, I found a nice hardwood floor under it, but the floor had a number of white water stains. How can I clean them off?
A. There are two ways to try. One is to make a mix of 1 part bleach and 3 parts water, and paint it on the whole floor. The other is to rub with Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, and I do mean rub, hard. To prepare, soak the eraser sponge, then squeeze it as dry as possible before rubbing. If the stains are black, the floor must be sanded to the bare wood and refinished.
Q. My basement foundation had two leaky areas. One is a vertical crack about 4 feet long and 1/8 inch wide. The other leak comes from a small metal rod which has rusted and lets water in. The rod, which runs through the foundation, seems to be an artifact of when the foundation was poured and was part of the forms. Last week, an electrician suggested that hydraulic cement may stop the leaks. How does it work and how do you apply it properly? What about those waterproof paints?
A. Yes, hydraulic cement can work in these situations. It expands as it sets, which is its best attribute. For the long vertical rack or joint, secure a piece of wood inside or out to hold back the hydraulic cement that you will try to stuff deeply into the crack. It will make a good seal. For the remains of the wires or rods in the opening, you can use them as reinforcing to help keep the mortar in place. I think a good mortar will work here better than hydraulic cement.
When a caller on Feb. 26 asked why a steam radiator in her bathroom never got hot, the Handyman had some crazy idea why, but not the right one. It took a call from Bill Tragakis, retired but still active president of Watertown Heating and Plumbing supply, to set things straight.
She needs a new steam vent, said Tragakis, but it is hard to put one in because the radiator is in the wall, so some of the wall must be chipped away to reach the defective valve and put a new one in. Tragakis says Gorton makes several rated valves and suggests she use one that will make the radiator piping hot.
Its funny, my wife just asked about the meaning and/or origin of piping hot, and Tragakis thought it might be related to a pipe organ, not heat. Good point, so off on the search we will go.
Q. Years ago I clipped a column of yours about attic furnaces. Your snarky response was, A hot-air furnace in the attic is the dumbest thing to foist upon hapless homeowners since vinyl siding. I am a hapless homeowner living in a 1964 brick ranch in the Denver metro area to which some DIYer applied the cruddiest grade of vinyl siding (cruddy installation to match) on the gables, fascia, soffits, and under a 12-by-20-foot covered patio. Home Depot reps gave me a replacement estimate (almost $9,000), but I put the project on hold in light of your comment, concerned about paying thousands to do the wrong thing.
