The world keeps shrinking for smokers.

As of New Years Day, it will be illegal to smoke on any bar or restaurant patio in Ontario, the province announced Friday.

Smoking is not only banned on public playgrounds and sports fields, it will be illegal to smoke within 20metres of them.

Sales of tobacco also will be prohibited anywhere on a college or university campus.

The new rules come as no surprise. London North Centre MPP Deb Matthews announced the new restrictions were coming a year ago when she was health minister.

The new provincial rules are tougher than the ban on smoking imposed by city council last year, which specified a nine-metre no-smoking zone around parks and recreational facilities. But council took no action on a recommendation from the Middlesex-London Health Unit to ban smoking on open patios, with some councillors arguing it would drive some bars and restaurants out of business.

Health unit manager Linda Stobo said the number of bars and restaurants affected will be limited because many have covered patios already subject to the smoking ban and about 20 establishments have voluntarily moved to end smoking on their patios.

One of them is Rich Hunter, owner of the King Edward Pub in Ilderton.

He banned smoking on his rear patio two years ago.

It was a business decision. It is what the majority of our customers wanted, he said.

RENAISSANCE WOMAN: Venus Williams has four full-time professional designers at her V Starr Interiors firm, including, from left, Michelle Koppelman, Sanna Mehlin Tilley and Ariana Ranieri.

This is what you get when you hire Venus Williams as your interior decorator: an enthusiastic designer who has travelled the world, drawing inspiration from Moscow to Beijing, but never quite had time to complete formal training; a team of professionals working with her; and a place on a client list that includes celebrities and professional athletes.

And, of course, you get Venus Williams.

She's one of the great tennis players of all time: seven Grand Slam singles titles, an Olympic gold medal, a woman who changed the face of modern tennis. Her father gave her a racket when she was just 4 years old and told her she was going to become the best player in the world.

"Most people decide what they want to do later in life, and some people know really early," she says. "For me, what I was doing was already decided. Thankfully, I liked it." But that was her father's dream, not hers. "This was like when you get to make your own choice about what you love."

And Williams loves, loves, loves designing. She talks about space planning, construction, lighting and fabric swatches like nobody's business. In fact, it is a business: for more than a decade, she has quietly run an interior design firm in her adopted home of Florida, both capitalising on and overcoming her famous name.

On Friday night, she'll be in the District of Columbia for the unveilling of her latest work: the renovated Southeast Tennis and Learning Centre, an after-school tennis, arts and academic programme created for children. Other people at the gala will see her as the tennis legend; she's there as the person responsible for the look and feel of the space.

"As a designer, you design and it's beautiful and people feel great when they walk in - but how have you changed the world?" she asks. "For us, this sort of project means so much to us because it's going to impact so many lives."

Venus Williams serves up interior design

BRISTOL A local man who sets up an elaborate holiday light show at his home every year is using the occasion to raise money and toys for three children who lost both their parents in June to a murder-suicide.

Anything donated on the opening night of the 3rd annual Lights on Roswood Nov. 28 at 111 Rosewood Drive will go to Whitney, 4, Brody, 3, and Lincoln, 1, whose mother, Kyla Ryng, was murdered by her husband, Alex Ryng, on June 4.

Police have said that all three children were in the familys Henderson Street home when Kyla was killed. After the shooting, the two oldest children ran next door to tell their grandmother what had happened.

Rob Osenkowski, a father of three who creates the holiday light show on Rosewood Drive every year, said the story of the Ryng children tragically losing both their parents in June hit close to home with him.

I have three boys, so I cant even imagine that happening to my family, he said.

The Christmas light display at his home, Osenkowski said, usually raises canned food goods for the needy.

This year, however, the opening night ceremony which is normally among only close family and friends is open to the public to benefit Kyla Ryngs three children.

Starting at 6 p.m. on Nov. 28, Osenkowski will be collecting clothes, toys, books, money or gift cards for the Ryng kids.
