Mukah people say no sand dredging

    - July 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If dredging resumes, more damage will occur in the area and it is possible that the retaining wall will sink into the river bed.

MUKAH: Villagers of Kampung Litong in Mukah are strongly against the renewed sand dredging works at the mouth of the Mukah River for fear of soil erosion in the village.

Its Village Chief, Jamahari Sahli claims that if dredging work resumes in the area then the village will sink and disappear from the world map.

We are concerned about the future of our village and our children, he complained. We have taken up the matter with the authorities concerned but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

Jamahari said that he and the other residents were not in principle against any party developing Mukah.

However, the future of the people in the village must also be taken into account, he added.

Apparently, dredging work was done at the river mouth before. However, on that occasion, the villagers successfully applied for a retaining wall to be built along the coast to reduce the impact of erosion.

If there was no retaining wall, I believe the whole village would have been destroyed by severe soil erosion resulting in strong tidal waves from the ocean, said Jamahari.

During the monsoon season, the waves are usually strong, high and hit the river banks at Kampung Litong.

If dredging resumes, more damage will occur in the area and it is possible that the retaining wall will sink into the river bed, he warned.

Maggie Valley mudslide lands in court

    - July 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Chiefly, they fault two sets of engineers and graders behind an extensive retaining wall that snaked a few hundred feet across the face of the mountain above their home. The suit claims the retaining wall was subpar and its collapse is what triggered the landslide and further, that the risk of the retaining walls failure was known but not revealed.

A year before the slide, this thing was showing signs of failure, Attorney Matthew Roberson, who is representing the couple, said in court Monday. You have Buck Mountain getting bored out by a massive landslide and our clients house being struck by a massive wall of mud as a result.

In addition to blaming the engineers and graders who built the wall, the suit names Ghost Town in the Sky, a mountaintop amusement park with chronic slope stability problems over the decades.

The suit accuses Steve Shiver, the former manager of Ghost Town in the Sky, of being inattentive at best to the threat posed by the strained retaining wall and at worst, intentionally turning a blind eye to the looming risk to downslope neighbors.

Meanwhile, the engineers and builders behind the wall claim theres no way to know what caused the landslide.

The problem with this case is this whole mountain came down, Bill Jones, an attorney for engineer Verlin Edwards, said in court Monday.

Jones proffered a chicken-and-egg conundrum. Did the landslide knock out the wall, or the wall fall and cause the landslide?

Did it start at the wall? Did it start below the wall? To testify on the cause of the failure would be speculation and conjecture, Jones said.

Such a deep bench of people being sued six individuals in all means a lot of lawyers in the kitchen. There were so many lawyers trying to pack in behind the defendants table this week, they couldnt all fit.

At the start of proceedings Monday, three of them took off down the hallway and returned a moment later, each wheeling an extra chair. Once they were settled, a row of seven lawyers snaked around the defendants table and along the wall, with boxes and giant binders of case files and exhibits mounded around them.

Whitehouse brothers prepare to compete in Pokmon World Championship

    - July 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    WHITEHOUSE, TX (KLTV) -

On a typical day in the Cunningham house, youll find Luke, Sam, and Hatch dueling their Pokmon trading cards, a hobby that could make two of the boys world champions.

They are fortunate enough to have each other, so they practice different decks with each other, said Ariana Cunningham, the boys' mom

They started playing two years ago. After placing in the national competition earlier this month, 13-year-old Luke and 10-year-old Hatch have qualified to compete in the 2014 Pokmon World Championship next month in Washington D.C.

The boys say there are thousands of Pokmon cards to choose from, and for every duel, each player can choose 60 to use. I usually will play an all basic deck using stuff for support. I want it to be very consistent, said Luke.

Each player draws seven cards from their decks and the duel begins.

Every Pokmon has certain attacks that cost a certain amount of energy, said Hatch

To win the game you can either earn six prize cards or knock out all of your opponent's Pokmon in play.

Each Pokmon has a certain amount of heart points, and once the heart points wear out, that Pokmon faints, Luke said.

Luke says duels can last anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes and he says to make it to this level of play, youve got to do your homework.
