Decks have been cleared for going ahead with 10 per cent disinvestment of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant even as the unions have termed it as an attempt for privatisation.

The navratna company is faced with cash crunch to fund its plan to achieve a production capacity of 12 million tonne with an estimated investment of Rs.22,000 crore. M.N. Dastur & Co. has already submitted its report for the next phase of expansion.

The disinvestment process, which was taken up during UPA-II was deferred twice in 2012 due to volatile market. With change of guard at the Centre, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told the Lok Sabha recently that the NDA Government would take up RINL disinvestment along with SAIL and HAL. We are not convinced with the contention that offloading of government shares will be restricted to just 10 per cent. It will subsequently open the floodgates for total privatisation, said All India Steel Workers Federation deputy general secretary D. Adinarayana. A RINL official said the navratna status to RINL would expire on November 16 before which either it had to be listed or the status extended for a year. Already it has been given two extensions due to uncertainty in the equity market.

Sources told The Hindu that RINL is expected to submit red herring prospectus to market regulator SEBI anytime for notifying Rs.2,500-crore IPO. Roadshows will be held both in India and abroad through the merchant bankers mainly to woo institutional investors.

Brisbane City Council has sacked the man who made Brisbanes buses run on time for the past 14 years, opening the door to privatising Brisbanes profitable bus runs.

The council opposition says the lord mayor is secretly clearing the decks for privatisation.

However Brisbane City Council last night said Brisane Transport had received an extension to run its bus services until September 2015, which would be well after the next state election.

The council runs Brisbane Transport, the states biggest provider of bus routes and the employer of 2700 employees.

In 2011 it ran 1200 buses on 245 routes, providing 63,859 bus services a week and 1465 school runs, which dropped to about 235 routes in early 2012.

A review of the councils bus routes in 2013 cut that number of routes to 225 and resulted in major changes to about 80 routes.

The Queensland government has begun the process of contestability, where the private sector can judge whether there is value for firms to compete against Brisbane Transport for the city's most-profitable routes.

Alan Warren, who has headed Brisbane Transport for 14 years, offered to renew his contract in November 2014, but that has been rejected by BCCs civic cabinet.

Brisbane Transport chief set to tap off after 14 years

BANGOR, Maine The last time you ate at a Bangor restaurant you probably didnt spend much time thinking about what was going down the drain in the kitchen. City officials have been thinking about it a lot and are beefing up efforts to ensure restaurants are doing all they can to prevent grease, fat and oil from wreaking havoc in the citys sewer system.

Every year, the Bangor Wastewater Treatment Plant collects about 58 tons of grease, coagulated fat and oil that has made its way through city sewers to the plant. That grease is shipped off to a landfill. This year, that work is expected to cost the city about $15,000, according to Brad Moore, plant superintendent.

If the plant didnt remove that waste, the grease would end up in the Penobscot River.

Some grease comes to the plant after it is dumped down the sinks of residents who have cooked their pound of bacon in the morning or browned a skillet of ground beef for tacos. The vast majority, however, comes from restaurants that arent in compliance with city codes that require them to use systems to prevent as much grease as possible from getting into the sewer system, Moore said.

When [the grease] cools off as it starts to get down into the sewer system, it starts coating the sides of the pipes and it actually can coat it to the point where it can block up the pipe, Moore said.

That means sending a machine that shoots a high-pressure water jet down the pipe to free up the clog and placing a vacuum truck at the other end to suck out the grease, all of which is an added expense to the city.

Were talking about two big, expensive pieces of equipment and four personnel dedicated to cleaning that one section of line, Moore said.

Crews are sent out to clear drains of congealed grease on a regular basis, he said, some of them repeatedly.

Most often, the clogged pipes can be found downstream of areas with a high concentration of restaurants, Moore said, so the city is putting its focus there.

Bangor wastewater treatment officials are implementing a new fats, oil and grease program aimed at dramatically reducing the amount of grease that ends up in the plant and in the citys roughly 160 miles of sewer lines.
