Historic grist mill at Eden Mill to close temporarily Monday

    - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Harford County Department of Parks and Recreation is closing the historic grist mill at Eden Mill Nature Center and Park this Monday for several months, as the exterior of the more than 200-year-old mill is renovated.

Workers will replace the exterior wooden siding and the building's 39 windows, Paul Magness, parks and recreation's deputy director, said Thursday.

"The siding that's there has run its course," Magness said. "It's at the end of its useful life."

The Eden Mill Nature Center next to the mill and the rest of the park grounds will remain open while the work at the mill is progress.

Magness explained that the windows and siding on the mill building must be replaced to ensure water does not leak into the structure during a rain storm.

"Water can very easily penetrate into the historic mill, and this will certainly help with that issue and protect the inside," Magness said.

The mill in Pylesville is a Harford County registered historic property, and the renovation project received approval from the county's historic commission in February.

Magness said the commission members had to ensure "replacement construction materials that we're using are going to match the existing size and color of the structure."

The county has a $194,280 contract with L.C. Bathon Builders. The mill is expected to be closed for tours for four months.

Magness said the contractor is "confident" the work will be completed in time for Eden Mill's annual Fall Fest scheduled for Nov. 8.

South Kitsap School District facilities crew busy with summer projects

    - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The roof replacement project at Sidney Glen Elementary School is the biggest of the summer for the South Kitsap School District.

But that is far from the only facilities upgrade in the district.

Tom OBrien, director of facilities and operations for SKSD, said there are three other roofing projects in SKSD.

Olalla Elementary School, which is about 44,000 square feet and opened in 1954, will undergo a partial roof replacement. OBrien said that will encompass 12,000 square feet that was blistered and leaky.

That is not the only work taking place this summer at Olalla. Mike Riley, SKSD assistant director of facilities and operations, said a new well will be installed at the school to complement the one that has serviced the school since 1966.

Olalla is the only school in the district that has its well managed by SKSD. All others are run by local water districts. Because of that, they looked into refurbishing the existing well, which Riley said provides 2 to 7 gallons per minute. But Riley said that might only increase water production to 12 gallons per minute and there is no guarantee that would occur.

The new well, which will service the school along with the old one, is expected to produce 25 gallons per minute, according to Riley.

It was the proper time, said Riley, who expects that project to finish in time for the start of the school year. You dont wait until you cant provide enough water to adequately manage the building.

There also will be a significant roof project at South Kitsap High School. Other portions of the schools roof have been repaired or replaced during the last decade. The latest project, OBrien said, will restore an 80,000-square-foot section of the roof. He said the roofers will re-coat the surface to add an additional 10 years of service life to it.

The area were doing today will put us in a situation where the high school essentially is done, OBrien said. Its sound and its in good shape.

Surplus in school budget allows for extra class section, shade replacements, more

    - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HARVARD -- The School Committee had the chance to fund a few necessities on Tuesday night, after learning of extra money available from the school omnibus budget.

Finance Director Lorraine Leonard compared the school district's fiscal year 2014 budget to the actual amount spent, ultimately identifying a $119,000 surplus.

Although identified as extra money, the surplus actually comes from the educational Devens fund that MassDevelopment pays to Harvard, she explained.

This way, the town does not have to use the extra money solely for what it was originally allocated for -- instead, the committee can choose what it needs to finance.

New Superintendent Linda Dwight presented a number of items that could be funded with the extra money, including a gym sound enhancement system, an additional teaching section at The Bromfield School, furniture for the faculty room at Bromfield and more.

School Committee member Patty Wenger suggested looking into what can be done for the ventilation system at Bromfield's science labs, which have had issues with heating and ventilation.

"Just for health reasons I'd like to find out what the possibilities are for the HVAC, because that is not a safe situation," she said.

Leonard said that there should be extra money next year from the state special-education Circuit Breaker fund.

Committee member Bob Sullebarger took issue with $5,000 allotted for signs for both schools that show the vision and core value statement.

"I think we would really hear about it," he said of giving that much money for signs.

DDN, WHIO, Cox volunteers remove 5,000 pounds of waste from river

    - July 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Thirty-two car tires, a rusty bumper, underwear, an orange cone, bowling balls, shoes and a Cabbage Patch doll that looked more like a Garbage Pail Kid were among the items Cox Media Group Ohio employees and other volunteers pulled from the Great Miami River Friday in downtown Dayton as part of Clean Sweep 2014.

In all, the 64 volunteers removed 5,000 pounds of waste.

Rob Rohr, Cox Media Group Ohios senior vice president and general manager, said conservation, the environment and sustainability are critically important to Cox Enterprises.

He noted that James Cox Kennedy, Coxs chairman, set a goal to send zero waste to landfills in the next seven to 10 years and to become carbon and water neutral in 25 to 30 years.

Cox is a tremendously large company and thats a very aggressive goal, Rohr said. Efforts like this (Clean Sweep) are one step forward to really achieving that.

The Cox employees from Dayton Daily News, WHIO TV and radio and other Cox companies participated in the effort organized by American Rivers and other groups.

The effort was part of a larger river cleanup effort that spans from Indian Lake down to the Ohio River.

The Northern Clean-up event from Indian Lake to Franklin continues Saturday, July 19.

Cox employees throughout the nation Dayton, Atlanta, Charlotte, S.C. and Jacksonville, Fla. included have

collected nearly 16 tons of waste as part of river clean-ups.
