A life-size "slice" of the planned exterior of Apple's under-construction Campus 2 has popped up in Gundelfingen, Germany, reports German enthusiast site iFun.de. Pictured posted on the site show two stories of the expected four- or five-story (above ground) structure, which will be built as a massive ring-like office building with a large natural area in the center. The segment was likely created to test the materials chosen for the building's exterior.
The exterior sample structure was spotted at Josef Gartner GmbH, a company that specializes in custom-made aluminum and steel building envelopes and facades. The company has been in the building business since 1868 and has offices in the UK and the US among other countries. A similar mock-up of a section of the building has also been seen in Cupertino.
The campus, which is expected to open sometime in 2016, will incorporate a number of state-of-the-art technologies for energy efficiency as well as featuring unusually long curved glass panels and other natural materials. A company specializing in 3D imagery has created a rich "flyover" of what the finished project will look like from the air, while ground crews are still in the earth-leveling stages of construction, with some retaining walls and an 40-foot trench completed thus far.

There's a new program aimed at helping property owners cut back on pollution, water use, and energy. It's called Home Energy Retrofit Opportunity (HERO) and it's making its way to Monterey.
It's a national program the city of Monterey will offer this December, giving homeowners a chance to cut back on their energy and water bills.
You can fill out an application online and if you qualify, you can upgrade your home's insulation, install energy efficient windows, solar panels and high efficiency toilets and shower heads, even graywater systems for example.

It's a sustainable opportunity Monterey city leaders are hoping the community will take advantage of, especially, during the drought.
"We all know we're in a drought now and if you can have someone come in your house and say if I can put in an energy efficient water heater, an on-demand water heater and you can reduce your consumption, that's a good thing," Monterey's General Services Superintendent George Helms said.
You must be a property owner to qualify. Once you qualify and take out a low interest loan from the program, you can start upgrading your home. You only make one payment a year that's added to your property taxes and interest from the loan is tax deductible.
Contractors hired to install energy efficient appliances and retrofit your home must be registered with the program.

HERO program coming to Monterey
Saltsburg Borough will apply for a $250,000 grant for a new playground by the end of this month, voted on by borough council at Mondays meeting.
Saltsburg officials will submit an application to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and the Commonwealth Financing Authority for a Greenways, Trails and Recreation Program grant that will help the borough build a new playground where a sewage treatment plant currently stands between Water Street and the West Penn Trail.
Right now, a community playground is set up in the borough, but according to council Vice President Kathy Muir, it isnt in good condition.
The old one has been vandalized. Its small, its outdated and needs to be separated from the basketball courts so the little kids are away from the bigger kids, Muir said.
The public basketball courts will remain in their current location at the park at the head of the West Penn Trail between the trail and Water Street, Muir said.
The application for the grant is due July 21 and will be submitted by grant writer Leann Chaney. The grant is part of the Marcellus Legacy Fund, which allocates funds for the planning, acquisition, rehabilitation and repair of greenways, recreational trails, open space, parks and beautification projects.
The borough is requesting the maximum amount of money authorized by the grant, $250,000.
According to the grant, projects require a 15 percent local cash match of the total project cost or cash equivalents for the appraised value of real estate. A parking lot that is set to be paved once the sewage treatment plant is torn down will qualify as the boroughs 15 percent match for the project, according to Chaney.
Councils vision for the new playground includes new equipment, a bathroom, water fountain, benches, garbage cans and more. In addition, Muir hopes to install security equipment to ensure the park is not vandalized.
Because of its location between the trails, there is a plan for the park to be nature-themed.
