Man sentenced for crashing into handful of cars, two porches after smoking PCP

    - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

An Allentown man said he was stressed out over not finding a job when he smoked PCP and then got behind the wheel of a minivan in December.

But Jason Simo crashed into a handful of cars along Allen Street and then smashed through two front porches, city police said.

Today Simo, of the 500 block of Saint George Street, was sentenced to one to two years in Lehigh County Prison, followed by two years of probation by Judge James Anthony.

He was ordered to pay more than $18,000 in restitution for the damage to the cars, porches and at least one injured person.

"This was not a typical DUI ... This was a very serious accident," Anthony said.

Simo was on parole at the time of the Dec. 9 crash and is set to be sentenced for his parole violation by Judge Maria Dantos. If Dantos makes that sentence consecutive to today's sentence, Simo could face state prison, Anthony said.

Police were initially called to North 10th and Allen streets for three cars struck and two front porches damaged by a minivan, according to court records.

Police said they found Simo confused and disoriented and he seemed to be under the influence. As the 27-year-old Simo was getting medical attention an officer saw that he was holding a small plastic bag containing a white substance; it would later test positive for cocaine, records say.

Police were then alerted to a series of damaged cars five blocks away on Allen Street, where witnesses said Simo rear-ended two cars with the minivan and hit a number of parked cars as he fled east on Allen Street, records say.

"I've got to apologize for everything I did," said Simo, who has been in county prison since the crash. "I just make bad decisions sometimes."

Anonymous donor steps up to help Laughlin church

    - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LAUGHLIN An anonymous donor has stepped up to help fund the construction of the Glady Laughlin Learning Center addition to Laughlin Community Church.

Senior Pastor Gene Lee announced that the challenger will contribute a match of $10,000 to a donation of $10,000 and will put the entire $20,000 gift in a second donors name, thus allowing a $20,000 federal income tax deduction for that individual.

A June 15 deadline has been set for the donors to take advantage of the match. The donations may be mailed to the church at P.O. Box 31527, Laughlin, NV 89028.

Last year an anonymous donor issued a $100,000 challenge. Contributions from residents and visitors exceeded the goal, and $205,000 was raised, enough to begin construction.

With the exterior done, work on the interior of the building has had to be halted until another $200,000 can be raised to meet the contract. In all, the project will cost about $650,000, including furnishings that are not part of the construction contract.

The addition has five classrooms, a conference room, restrooms, a large kitchen and pantry, plus a 2,900 square-foot fellowship hall. When completed, it will be the largest such church-based facility in Laughlin.

The annex is named in honor of church member Glady Laughlin, a retired Bennett Elementary School principal who championed the cause of caring for children and the poor.

Laughlin Community Church is at 2910 S. Needles Highway.

Destiny Church to open 'City of God'

    Brian Tamaki

Australian Idol 2009 winner Stan Walker will sing in a free concert in a giant marquee put up yesterday in front of the converted pillow factory in Druces Rd, Wiri, which the church bought in 2010.

The price has not been disclosed but the 3.1ha site has a 2011 rating valuation of $7.65 million.

Guided tours will be offered of the sprawling complex, featuring what is said to be New Zealand's biggest permanent LED wall, a 24-metre-wide screen which arrived from China last week to form the backdrop for the main 864-seat auditorium.

Giant photographs of founders Bishop Brian Tamaki and his wife Hannah hang in several public spaces in between a school with 170 students, an early childhood centre for 70, a gym, a recording studio and function rooms.

From outside, the building still looks like a factory. The most conspicuous sign is a giant billboard for the SuperCity gym operated by the Tamakis' son-in-law Kaine Warren, which provides boxing training for local youths on a donation basis and boasts adult fees as low as $12 a week.

Inside, piles of insulation and other building materials were still waiting to be installed yesterday afternoon. Spokeswoman Anne Williamson said volunteers would be working through the night to complete construction in time for a banquet tonight marking the Tamakis' 30 years in the ministry.

"Electricians, welders and builders, my husband included, will turn up after work tonight and will work through until probably 12 o'clock."

The church has funded the new complex by selling its previous base in Mt Wellington, valued at $4.9 million, and by asking each family in the church to donate $1000.

Membership has been reported to be dwindling. Accounts filed with the Charities Office show that donations to the Auckland church declined from $2.1 million in 2008 to $1.7 million in 2012.

United for Africa Concert Benefits Children of Ghana

    - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    (PRWEB) May 28, 2014

The Church of Scientology Mission of Modena and the Association for Human Rights and Tolerance held a United for Africa benefit concert May 9 at Teatro Michelangelo to raise funds to build schools for African children who would otherwise be denied the right to education.

Her Excellency Mrs. Evelyn Anita Stokes-Hayford, Ghana's Ambassador to Italy, thanked the Association for Human Rights and Tolerance and the Church of Scientology for their efforts to safeguard fundamental human rights through the construction of schools, delivery of educational materials and many other activities and their exemplary help, that has brought joy to many villages in the Northern, Eastern, and Central Regions, thereby bringing improvement into the lives of the less privileged.

The concert was directed and conducted by Laura De Vitis and featured music by American singer/composer Cheryl Porter and performances by the Dynamo music group, tenor Patrick Salati, comedian Duilio Pizzocchi and ventriloquist Samuel Barletti.

The concert motto was taken from the writings of author, humanitarian and Scientology Founder L. Ron Hubbard: Human rights must be made a fact, not an idealistic dream.

Some patio goer say they wish smoking on patios would be banned. May 29, 2014

WINNIPEG A growing majority of Winnipeggers iscalling for smoking to be banned on public patios, a new poll shows.

67% support extending smoking bans to outdoor patios of restaurants and bars, an increase from 58% in 2008, says the survey obtained exclusively by Global News Thursday.

One thing we want to do is show that (a smoking ban)has public support, said Murray Gibson from the Manitoba Tobacco Reduction Alliance, which plans to release more poll results on smoking bans Friday.

Manitobas2004 Non-Smokers Health Protection Act banned smoking in all enclosed public places and indoor workplaces, but did not apply to outdoor eating and drinking areas.

The province doesnt plan on changing that law anytime soon, Manitobas Healthy Living Minister told Global News Thursday.

Ithink its one of those things we have to consider and we have to do things incrementally, but at this point, most people seem to be satisfied with the way things are, Sharon Blady said.

A Winnipeg city councillor seemed more open to the idea.

We may be moving now to a place where we should talk about that for the patio, I think thats a debate we should have, said Brian Mayes (St. Vital).

Outdoor dining is in season at these popular Parma patios

    - May 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PARMA, Ohio At long last, warm weather is here, which means outdoor dining season is back.

With the recent bump in temperatures, diners are flocking to patios at restaurants around Parma.

Here are some of the city's more popular outdoor dining locations.

Tradesman Tavern, 5746 State Road, 440-888-2337: This attractive patio has been a favorite gathering place in the city for about a decade, said Michelle Ipavec, tavern manager.

"Business has been phenomenal. We were packed Memorial Day weekend," She said.

The patio was designed by David Martina, a stone mason. It features high brick walls with decorative metalwork. There is a big TV behind the bar so diners can view sports or other programs. The patio has full bar and food service.

Ipavec said the patio can accommodate about 60-70 people, with another 10-12 seats at the bar. Music from the jukebox can be heard outside and Ipavec said sometimes a DJ will play or they have booked acoustic musicians. She said a cigar club meets on Wednesday nights from about 7 until midnight on the patio.

Tradesman hours are 11 a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Monday through Saturday; closed Sunday.

Corleone's Ristorante & Bar, 5669 Broadview Road, 216-741-0220: The patio at Corleone's Ristorante & Bar is spacious and inviting. Large, colorful, mural-like paintings decorate the outside brick wall behind the bar area. Tables can accommodate about 90 outdoor diners, said Debbie Suvak, a manager of the restaurant.

It's still a little early in the outdoor dining season, but Suvak said customers enjoy eating on the patio when weather permits. She said the patio, designed by John Goodworth of Medina, opened in 2007.
