Omnipolarity allows sensors to be activated by north or south pole. Honeywell International 14503-T Bammel North Houston Rd., Suite 300 Houston, TX, 77014 USA Press release date: May 19, 2014
High sensitivity allows design engineers to reduce system costs Nanopower allows for use in battery operated equipment with extremely low power requirements Solid state, non-contact design provides a reliable, durable alternative to reed switches
MINNEAPOLIS Honeywell (NYSE:HON) today introduced the industrys first Nanopower Anisotropic Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs that provide the highest level of magnetic sensitivity (as low as 7 Gauss typical) while requiring nanopower (360 nA). When compared to other widely used magnetic technologies, these sensors offer design engineers a number of advantages.
Smaller and more durable and reliable than reed switches, at the same sensitivity and essentially the same cost, the new Nanopower Series Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs are ideal for battery powered applications where previously only reed switches could be used due to very low power requirements and large air gap needs.
Compared with Hall-effect sensors, the new Nanopower Series Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs higher sensitivity can allow the ability to sense air gaps two times the distance of Hall-effect sensors. The higher sensitivity improves design flexibility and can offer significant application cost savings by utilizing smaller or lower strength magnets.
The Nanopower Series Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs are designed for use in a wide range of battery-operated applications including water and gas meters, electricity meters, industrial smoke detectors, exercise equipment, security systems, handheld computers, scanners, as well as white goods such as dishwashers, microwaves, washing machines, refrigerators and coffee machines, and medical equipment such as hospital beds, medication dispensing cabinets, infusion pumps, and consumer electronics such as notebook computers, tablets, and cordless speakers.
Due to the significant price increases for rare earth magnets, design engineers using Hall-effect sensors have been looking for ways to decrease the total cost of design by using less magnetic material, or moving to a more common magnet in their applications, said Josh Edberg, senior product marketing manager for Honeywell Sensing and Control. Design engineers are also looking for an alternative to reed switches to reduce size and increase quality and durability, while maximizing battery life. Honeywells new Nanopower Series Magnetoresistive Sensor ICs are ideal for these battery powered applications due to their high sensitivity and nanopower.
The Nanopower Series is available in two magnetic sensitivities: -- Ultra-high sensitivity SM351LT: 7 Gauss typical operate, 11 Gauss maximum operate, very low current draw (360 nA typical) -- Very high sensitivity SM353LT: 14 Gauss typical operate, 20 Gauss maximum operate, very low current draw (310 nA typical)
Omnipolarity allows the sensor to be activated by either a north or south pole, eliminating the need for the magnet polarity to be identified, simplifying installation and potentially reducing system cost. The push-pull (CMOS) output does not require external resistors, making it easier and more cost-effective to operate. The non-chopper stabilized design eliminates electrical noise generated by the sensor. The subminiature SOT-23 surface mount package, supplied on tape and reel (3000 units per reel), is smaller than most reed switches, allowing for use in automated pick-and-place component installation and can reduce production costs.

Crawling out of the standard-materials rut when remodeling -- you know, the conventional idea that counters must be stone or tile, floors wood, yada yada -- opens up a brave new world of possibilities. New alternatives can also save a lot of money and win environmental Brownie points.
For full details, just ask Janet Hall, the San Francisco-based co-founder, editor-at-large and "materials maven" at the popular renovation and home-design website Remodelista.
Hall and her colleagues curate a wealth of mind-bending ideas, many of them from cutting-edge decorators and architects who are constantly seeking never-seen-before concepts for the home.
"Some motivating factors (for switching to new materials) include budget considerations," Hall says, "plus an effort to reduce consumption and repurpose items people already have in the home or that have been used by someone else. Also to add personality, creativity and originality into the design."
Just imagine a multihued herringbone floor made from dirt-cheap steel; old leather belts deployed as curtain rods; rustic barn siding on countertops; inexpensive plumbers piping repurposed for hanging contemporary pendant lights.
Hall's mantra is "Recycling, repurposing and reusing," and that applies to every conceivable safe, practical material out there.
New uses
Burlap -- that inexpensive, rough-textured, neutral-toned fabric of feed-sack fame -- is having its moment. Remodelista shows it transformed into window coverings, table runners, room dividers and more. Particularly unexpected was an elegant atelier at the 2013 San Francisco Decorator Showcase from designer Antonio Martins that had not only burlap "walls" but an eye-popping floor of mottled, bluish, cold-rolled steel in a herringbone pattern. Though supremely durable, it didn't look like metal at all.
The Richlite countertop and backsplash in the Bay Area home of Remodelista co-founder Julie Carlson are heat resistant, nonporous, durable, warm-to-the-touch and inherently antibacterial. (Matthew Williams/Remodelista)
For DIY curtain rods, Hall says, "We like plumbers pipe, especially if you want a vintage, farmhouse kind of look." If you prefer something sleek and modern, she points to a small, avant-garde light pendant that can be built, again using plumbers pipe, for $60.

Within the next five years, Sewickley will see some kind of parking development, Mayor Brian Jeffe said.
What remains to be seen is whether that development will be a parking garage and whether it will be developed privately or publicly or an extension of an existing flat-surface lot.
Nothing is going to happen for some time, Jeffe said in an interview with the Sewickley Herald days after borough leaders hosted a public meeting to discuss a parking study made public last month.
That study completed by Khurshid Hoda, a consultant with Chicago-based Kimley-Horn and Associates at a cost of $25,700 determined Sewickley will need 300 additional parking spaces over the next five years to meet demand.
Hoda said his results took into account possible future developments, including a two-screen movie theater complex nonprofit group Village Theater Co. is seeking to build on Walnut Street and a nearby proposed 30,000-square-foot office building.
Those proposed developments have the borough at somewhat of a crossroads by our own rules, Jeffe said.
Municipal laws require developers address parking needs based on square footage of developments.
With the two proposed developments, we're tapped out, Jeffe said.
We have to address parking, he said.

21st Century Flooring America is located at 12001 Shelbyville Rd., just west of Evergreen Road.
Co-owner Tim French has seen choices for trim and decoration multiply in recent years.
Even though wall-to-wall carpeting was the fashion when Tim French was a boy when his mother decided to have their rugs taken up, they found beautiful hardwood floors underneath.
That childhood revelation helped lead him to a 25-year career in the flooring industry.
Today, as co-owner of 21st Century Flooring America, located at 12001 Shelbyville Rd., he uses his expertise to help customers find the best ways to make their own floors beautiful.
Tim and co-owner Greg Harmon, who has been installing floors for 20 years, opened the store in May, following the success of their New Albany location.
They are retail members of Flooring America, a Canadian-based organization servings the Americas.
Its a 500-member cooperative buying group that gives us an edge, Tim said. Large manufacturers, such as Mannington and Armstrong make special products for our group. Were also able to offer better pricing across the board.
Canadas beautiful forests provide many lines of hardwood flooring carried at 21st Century Flooring America, with finishes ranging from hand-scraped to polished.
New fabrics and patterns inspire dramatic area rugs or whole-room carpeting.

The handsome look of wood is enduringly popular as a building material or a dcor accent. Features such as rustic ceiling beams are now coming back into style after a long hiatus. However, natural hardwood, charming as it may be, is not always the most practical or affordable option. Take a good long look at the new faux woods they just might turn out to be the best choice for your flooring, deck or decorative beam or panel project. Interesting faux wood fact: What most people think of as "fake" often contains a high percentage of real wood, usually in the form of recycled pre-consumer waste. It can be a surprisingly eco-friendly alternative.
Flooring
The most common type of faux wood used as flooring is laminate. This consists of several layers, including a moisture barrier on the underside, a layer of recycled wood fiber, a veneer (or a photograph in less expensive varieties) of real hardwood and a melamine finish on top.
Laminate has quite a few advantages. It costs substantially less than hardwood, making it easier on your budget even if you live in the famously expensive DC region. As well, Washington laminate flooring installation is simpler and does not raise the floor surface as much. Durable, with good scratch-, sun- and moisture-resistance, laminate is easy to maintain, requiring no polishing, and will stand up to wheelchair use much better than hardwood. Look for a guarantee of 15 to 25 years.
There are a number of areas where laminate does not stack up to real hardwood. The first is in terms of looks laminate, especially the cheaper versions, lacks the beauty and depth of authentic wood. It can be complicated to mend, since it cant be sanded. Manufacturers do sell touch up and repair kits, though. If the laminate is made up of individual planks, replacing a damaged piece is simplified.
On the green front, laminate relies on rapidly renewable resources, and makes use of a higher percentage of each tree than traditional hardwood harvesting. The installation process does not require adhesive. On the other hand, laminate flooring may give off dangerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs), even formaldehyde. Ventilate well during, and for some time after, installing, and then seal the floor. Look for material produced in compliance with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Decks and Railings
Faux wood for outdoor living spaces, such as decks, porches and railings, is cheaper and easier to install than regular hardwood. Harder-wearing and longer-lasting, it stands up to extremes of heat and cold as well as rain and other forms of precipitation. And, of course, it is not appetizing to termites as natural wood is.
In appearance, a faux wood porch cant compete with a glorious redwood deck, but this material is gradually being produced in better-looking forms.

In todays corporate world, the interior architectural design professionals at OTJ Architects continue to see the workplace culture shift from cubicles and individual workstations to open office spaces with environments to promote collaboration, concentration and community. However, choosing if an open office is right for a particular company can be a tricky decision one that depends most on how staff functions best supporting the organizations overall mission.
Organizations that invest in creating work environments that accommodate all types of employees and working styles are seeing successful results in recruiting the best and the brightest minds, while also retaining existing employees, said Lance Jaccard, Partner at OTJ Architects.
An open office environment allows employees to brainstorm and collaborate which helps increase morale and greatly improve productivity. The following additional benefits are provided with an open office design:
Not all organizations require a high level of collaboration. A law firm, for instance, may require a more quiet, head-down type of work atmosphere and private offices. Companies today will see greater enjoyment in their workplace design when they are able to determine which way their employees work and interact best. OTJ is able to provide guidance, industry best practices, benchmarking data and varying options so that clients can make an informed decision that will affect their organizations for years to come.
OTJ designs utilizing various levels of open and closed spaces include the office for Searle Freedom Trust that utilized both private and collaborative workspaces, a closed office environment for The Weinberg Group with glass throughout the space to provide ample natural light to enter the floor plate, and multiple meeting spaces of varying sizes, openness and seating types to allow for greater employee collaboration at the National Parks Conservation Association.
We work with our clients to determine what the best fit is for their organization, said Tony Martin, Partner at OTJ Architects. We have had great success with both office styles, including many workplaces with a healthy balance of collaboration and privacy that help our clients better achieve their organizational goals and objectives.
Contact OTJ Architects to discuss your architectural needs today.
