One paragraph leapt out of Erin Pizzeys brilliant demolition of the Governments plans for a so-called Cinderella Law which would make emotional neglect of children a criminal offence.
Writing in the Mail, she said: In the old days, health visitors and community midwives went into peoples homes to help them. These days, the social workers are increasingly sent to judge and punish.
Pizzey highlighted the case of a loving mother-of-three on benefits, struggling to cope. What she really needed was a washing machine to make her life easier.
Social services could have helped her to get one through a local charity, but instead they hounded her and tried to take away her children. The more power social workers and courts possess, the more they will use it.

This unfortunate woman was terrified of losing her children and was rude to the social workers.
Affronted by any challenge to their authority, they were going to make her suffer for it.
Pizzey was referring to so-called caring professionals, but she could just as easily have been talking about anyone hired by the State these days to serve the public.
It has been a consistent theme of this column that if you give anyone any modicum of power, especially if it comes with a fancy job title and a hi-viz jacket, they will always, always abuse it.
When Italian-born interior decorator Alessandra Branca and her husband Steve Uihlein built a vacation home on Harbour Islanda long, narrow island in the Bahamas' where, per Architectural Digest's rendition, the "predominant mode of transportation is the golf cart," and one would have to choose between Bill Gates and Diane von Furstenberg if looking to borrow a cup of sugarincorporating vernacular elements was key. They chose classic regional materials like pecky cypress and coral stone for the two stucco-and-shingle British Colonials they situated at opposite ends of a 40-foot-long swimming pool, one a six-bedroom with a veranda on both levels, the other a poolhouse with extra guest quarters. Other traditional features have obvious benefits, like the Bahamian upside-down house plan, which puts bedrooms on the ground floor and public areas on the top, keeping the communal living and dining rooms breezy and cool, but the decorator added a few personal touches to the project, which she spent time away from homes in Rome, Manhattan, and Chicago to help oversee.
The main house's staircases, for example, were made wider at the base, so guests, including the couple's three grown children, "feel like open arms are welcoming them." As to Branca's work on the interior, it channels the same aspiration she had when decorating a Manhattan apartment for Hearst's seventh annual Designer Visions showcase; as she explained while giving a tour last fall, "Any time I can link the past and now in a new and unexpected way, that's where I'm happy." This kind of remixing plays out in the living room, pictured above, with a pair of vintage armchairs outfitted with Bennison-print cushions, and a few nineteenth-century campaign chairs run through with thick Alessandra Branca for Schumacher stripes.

Garden designer Georgia Lindsay is in the final of a Grand Designs competition
Shakespeare said all the worlds a stage but for Georgia Lindsay it is more of a garden.
The 44-year-old, from Crystal Palace, originally trained in theatre design and is a mural artist and interior decorator.
But since 2010 she developed a passion for garden design and is now down to the final four in this years Grand Designs competition for her small city garden design.
She said: "Maximising a small space to create an interesting enjoyable place to relax is my forte.
"It is a family garden, where relaxation and play co-exist harmoniously.
"The garden has many sustainable, green features which is a strong ethos behind the Grand Designs image.

One of the Jersey Shores most popular bar and restaurant destinations, Bar Anticipation in Belmar, N.J., was facing structural and surface problems with its kitchen floor. Upon receiving a new urethane mortar system from Garon Products Inc., the floor was completely restored to offer a durable surface that could withstand harsh conditions of a fast-paced eatery.
The bar and restaurant was renovating its existing kitchen, walk-in coolers and walk-in freezer area. The existing floor experienced leaking issues that needed to be fixed. The above- grade subfloor had popping quarry tile embedded with grease and the plywood floors underneath the tile were being eaten away from the daily abuse of hot water andgrease/oil penetrating through the tile grout lines.
The challenge was to undertake the renovation and floor installation without shutting down the kitchen.
After the restaurant replaced the rotted wood flooring with 2" thick outdoor marine-grade multiple layer plywoodthat could support the urethane mortar, a 3/8" thick seamless urethane mortar system [Mortarthane HF]. The top coat provided additional traction so the floor is slip-resistant, while also providing outstanding durability and an improved aesthetic.
A 6" cove was placed around the perimeter of the kitchen with urethane cove mortar [Mortarthane Cove Mortar] during a process known as, bathtubbing. This makes an impervious, bacteria-free surface as well as protection from daily hot wash downs that could potentially penetrate through the sub floor.
The final result was an easy-to-clean flooring system that can withstand hot wash downs, traffic, hot and cold equipment, improved slip resistance, and OSHA compliance.
The Restaurant owner's timeline requirements for the project were met without having to shut down the kitchen and a product was delivered that will continue to keep Bar Anticipation serving up food and drink for years to come.

Exposure to morning light, whether it's pure sunlight or bright indoor lighting, is associated with leaner body weights, researchers say.
The findings fit with a growing body of evidence that suggests keeping our internal body clocks synchronized with the natural light-dark cycle is beneficial to our health and our waistlines.
To better understand this relationship, researchers at Northwestern University recruited 54 adults (average age 30) from the Chicago area and had them wear wrist monitors that tracked their exposure to light and sleep patterns for a week. The participants recorded what they were eating in daily logs so the researchers could estimate caloric intake.
"We found that the earlier this light exposure occurred during the day, the lower individuals' body mass index," says study author Kathryn Reid, a research associate professor at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
That was true even when the researchers accounted for activity level, caloric intake, sleep timing, age or season. The people with the strongest correlation between light and BMI were exposed to more than 500 lux of light, equivalent to bright indoor lighting. Outdoor light can range from 1,000 lux up into the hundreds of thousands.
The study was published Wednesday in the journal PLoS One.
So there may be another reason my early morning jogs make me happy, beyond the release of endorphins.
"We weren't necessarily surprised by the findings," Reid told me, since she'd hypothesized that exposure to light plays a role in regulating metabolism. She points to animal studies in mice where disrupting the natural light-dark cycle with long periods of exposure to light leads to weight gain.
People should get more bright light between 8 a.m. and noon, the study authors say. They think about 20 to 30 minutes of morning light is enough to affect BMI (body mass index).
Now, to be clear, the relationship between morning light and a healthy body weight has not been nailed down as cause and effect.
