EXCLUSIVE: Tories preening feathers for leadership race, Nenshi tells committee

    - April 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mayor Naheed Nenshi hopes preening Tory politicians wont slow the governments policy agenda by quitting cabinet posts to pursue their partys leadership.

He told council colleagues Thursday he was enthused after a meeting this week with Premier Dave Hancock, confident that Alison Redfords temporary replacement wants to move fast on a number of long-stewing files.

But he expressed worry that may not happen because several key ministers are chomping at the bit to run for leader instead of staying in cabinet.

He insinuated that a couple of Tory ministers were politicking from the pulpit on Wednesday in eulogies at the memorial service for Jon Lord, the former MLA and alderman who died unexpectedly last week.

Ive seen several of them over the course of the last week, and oh my gosh are they preening their feathers, the mayor said Thursday at councils intergovernmental affairs committee.

Just getting ready. Even yesterday, we saw a bit of that, didnt we, Councillor Demong, on stage?

Coun. Peter Demong, who also spoke at Lords service, replied curtly: No comment.

Two cabinet ministers, Ric McIver and Thomas Lukaszuk, delivered eulogies for the man they both knew in politics and personally. Both are among six cabinet ministers who have mused about running to become PC leader and premier, although it remains a race with no candidates two weeks after Redford announced her resignation.

Lukaszuk was taken aback when told of the mayors remarks about preening feathers at the memorial.

This was the funeral of a very dear friend. And any insinuation that there was anything political about that is simply not reflective of what has happened, the jobs minister said.

    MoonDogs Add Two More

    - April 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

April 3, 2014 - Northwoods League (Northwoods) Mankato MoonDogs MANKATO-Minn. The Mankato MoonDogs Baseball Club, a member of the Northwoods League is excited to announce the additions of pitcher Taylor Elman along with outfielder Brett Murray to the 2014 MoonDogs roster.

Elman, a 6-foot-3-inch 180-pound sophomore at Creighton University appeared in 13 games for the Blue Jays as a freshman, including two starts. This season, the right-hander has pitched 31.2 innings good for second most on the team.

"Elman is a guy who can pitch in the upper eighties and has a good breaking ball," MoonDogs Field Manager Mike Orchard said. "He can go either way for us as far as starting or in the bullpen."

Murray, a 5-foot-11-inch 190-pound sophomore is in his first year with the Blue Jays. As a freshman at Hill Junior College, he appeared in 53 games and finished with a .336 batting average and 40 RBI. He also earned all-conference second team recognition.

"Murray will play right field for us and bat in the five hole," Orchard said. "He has a good stroke at the plate and should be perfect for the middle of the order."

This season Murray is currently batting .261 with 8 RBI and has yet to commit an error in 23 games in the outfield.

The MoonDogs home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, May 28 at 7:05 p.m. against the Alexandria Blue Anchors at Franklin Rogers Park. Season tickets are now on sale at the MoonDogs office located at 1221 Caledonia Street.

Ellie's Hats: Donations to Va. child with cancer becomes charity

    - April 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    FALLS CHURCH, Va. -

The inclination of a public school teacher to help a kindergartner cope with cancer may turn into a full-fledged charity. This is the story of Ellies Hats.

Five-year-old Ellie Whitfield is now growing a short, but thick, crop of red hair on her head. Last year, Ellie was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, which required immediate chemotherapy. She lost all of her hair as a kindergartner, and started wearing hats every day to Woodburn Elementary School in Falls Church, Va.

Jennica Whitfield, Ellies mom, says her daughter sometimes feels quite unwell from the chemotherapy, but does not mind wearing hats.

Even when she was a baby, she loved to wear hats, said Jennica. Shes always been kind of a hat girl. So it was just kind of a natural transition for her. It wasnt a big deal to wear hats.

Ellies physical education teacher at Woodburn, Jay Coakley, noticed the kindergartner loved her hats, so he organized a hat drive, which vastly expanded Ellies choice of chapeaus.

Jennica Whitfield told us, She has, really, a lot of fun hats to wear. Every morning Ill say, Ellie what hat do you want to wear? And she says, Bring me my hats. And she takes the bag and she looks through, and decides what hats she wants to wear for the day.

Coakley used social media to spread the word about Ellies Hats, and an eighth grader in Loudoun County decided to try to get hat donations from all 50 states. That she accomplished in four-and-a-half days.

The surplus hats got donated to other families of young children getting cancer treatments at local hospitals and clinics.

And the feedback we got from the parents of the kids that got the hats was very positive, according to Coakley. So, in January, we started Ellies Hats, named after Ellie. And we collect and donate hats to children with cancer.
