Creating a low-carbon future means combining by home and transportation, according to Honda.
Honda today marked the opening of Honda Smart Home US, showcasing technologies that enable zero net energy living and transportation. The home, located on the West Village campus of the University of California, Davis, is capable of producing more energy on-site from renewable sources than it consumes annually from the electric grid, including enough energy to power a Honda Fit EV for daily commuting. A Honda-developed home energy management system and an energy efficient design will allow the homes occupant to use less than half of the energy of a similarly sized new home in the Davis area for heating, cooling and lighting. The home is also three times more water-efficient than a typical U.S. home.
Honda Smart Home US, construction of which began in April 2013, will serve as a residence for a member of the UC Davis community, whose selection will soon be announced. The fully-furnished home comes equipped with a Honda Fit EV battery electric vehicle for the residents daily transportation.
In addition to showcasing Hondas vision for sustainable, zero-carbon living and personal mobility, the home will function as a living laboratory where the company, along with researchers from UC Davis and Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), will evaluate new technologies and business opportunities at the intersection of housing, transportation, energy and the environment.
Hondas environmental efforts extend beyond personal mobility to address two of the primary sources of CO2emissions: cars and homes. Together, energy used to power homes and light duty vehicles contributes to approximately 44% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions in the United Statesi. Technology that enables distributed renewable energy generation to supply power to homes and cars seamlessly is one of the key potential pathways to address climate change.
UC Daviss West Village, where the Honda Smart Homes is located, is the largest planned zero net energy housing development in the U.S. Opened in 2011, West Village is home to the universitys internationally recognized research centers focused on energy efficiency, sustainability and transportation.
Honda Smart Home US implements Hondas home energy management system (HEMS), a proprietary hardware and software system that monitors, controls and optimizes electrical generation and consumption throughout the homes microgrid. A 10kWh battery energy storage system in the garage, using the same lithium-ion cells that are used in the Honda Fit EV, allows stored solar energy to be used at night, when household demand typically peaks and electric vehicles are usually charged. Hondas HEMS leverages the battery to balance, shift and buffer loads to minimize the homes impact to the electric grid. The system will also enable Honda to evaluate the second life, or re-use, of EV batteries in grid applications, home-to-grid (H2G) connectivity and other concepts.
Hondas HEMS is also capable of improving grid reliability by automatically responding to demand response signals and providing other grid services. If the electricity grid is overloaded, for example, Honda Smart Home is capable of shedding its load and even supplying power back to the grid. This type of smart grid connectivity will enable the mass deployment of electric vehicles and renewable energy without sacrificing grid reliability.

BOWMAN GROUP ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Design inspiration can strike at any time. For interior decorator Robin Strickler, when it came to dreaming up her own Newport Beach family home, that moment came when she first watched Somethings Gotta Give, the 2003 Nancy Meyers romantic comedy with Diane Keaton and Jack Nicholson. For Strickler and countless other design junkies, however, the true star of the film was the sprawling Hamptons home with its soothing and textured palette of neutrals. It was that movie that inspired me to create a home that is more Hamptons, as opposed to a beachy cottage look. For me, its all about a look that is clean and cozy at the same time, says Strickler, who is the owner of Design Works in Costa Mesa.
More research ensued as in, Strickler watched the movie more than a dozen times, closely studying not just its furniture and accessories but also its architectural elements and finishes, like transom windows, dark wood floors and high-ceiling spaces. The dark hardwood floors set the tone, says Strickler. Then pretty much everything else is white. The overall effect is to go with the cooler, monochromatic palette and leave the color to the artwork. It suits the house and is a soothing backdrop to the architecture.
Hence, there are no fuchsia throw pillows, bright yellow wallpaper or vibrant green armchairs here. Instead, Strickler, who sourced much of the furniture from vintage stores as well as Hickory Chair and Lillian August, created a rainbow of textures instead of colors. There are velvets and flax linens and woven fabrics. Gray was actually my accent color, she admits. Were probably the only firm in town that designs without a lot of color.
And while the home has a wine cellar, a chefs kitchen and indoor-outdoor flow, the scene-stealer is the great room. The large space, with its mix of new and vintage elements, its high ceilings and cleverly differentiated areas that dont disrupt the flow, works as a stylish anchor to the entire home. I put in pieces that look good, but that will also get used, says Strickler.
Not that the decorator got every last film-inspired design detail that she dreamed of. One of her favorite spots in the movie is Diane Keatons master bedroom desk, an area where the actress writes, ruminates and cries (a lot). Strickler hoped to create a similar space in her home, but the approval process intervened. I loved that office off the bedroom, but the city didnt approve it, so instead we did a window seat there. Now Ive grown to really love and use that space, too.

Nearly 40 years after Grannys Attic opened at Sunrise Ridge, its members are scheduled to vote next week on moving the non-profit thrift store into town.
Grannys eight-person board is recommending that its members, who volunteer at the store and vote on policy matters, move to relocate the shop to the Vashon Market IGA shopping center. Supporters of the idea say that doing so would provide additional and better space for the cramped store and bring it to a central, more easily accessible location. It would also free members of the nonprofit to focus the stores proceeds on fulfilling health-related grants instead of on maintaining and remodeling the aging Sunrise Ridge facility.
Other Grannys members, however, say that they are being asked to make the decision far too quickly. Some believe Grannys history at Sunrise Ridge is important and that the board has not done its due diligence internally or externally, including communicating with its landlords at Sunrise Ridge, who say the news took them by surprise.
Susan Chun, the president of the Grannys board since January, acknowledged the disagreement and the magnitude of the potential transition.
It was a tough decision all the way around, she said. It has not been easy.
Questions about moving surfaced last year, Chun noted, but the idea was dismissed in part because of the sheer enormity of the task. However, as the cold and rain of winter set in, the concrete buildings with inadequate heat and leaking roofs showed their age, and the idea surfaced again in February, she said. Tim Johnson, the business manager at Grannys, was asked to determine if there were viable options for the store elsewhere on Vashon and to make a recommendation to the board. While he started the process believing Grannys should stay at its longtime home, he said he changed his mind after exploring the possibilities.
Its where the evidence led me, he said.
When it met March 17, the Grannys board considered three options, Chun said: to stay at the site and pay to fix problems at the buildings and in the parking lot, to take over ownership of the site with the Sunrise Ridge board or to relocate.
Because most Grannys board members do not want to continue paying for repairs at the site, she said one option stood out.
The only thing that made sense to the board was to look elsewhere, she said.
