First Person: I Cut My Home Repair Costs by 85% - October 1, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

After remodeling my home over a period of four years, I didn't expect to have more projects to deal with. But every year something else breaks, requiring more investments. This year, I received quotes totaling $6,300 for three home repair projects. Instead, I decided to tackle the repairs myself and ended up spending $930, for a total savings of $5,370.

    Repairing a failing window

When the seal in two of my double-paned windows failed, the windows became foggy and smeared with the melting black seal. Not only was this unsightly but the windows ceased to be energy efficient. A window company quoted me $1,200 to replace each window ($2,400 for two).

With a little research, however, I learned that the windows can be repaired instead of replaced at a fraction of the cost, totaling $500 for both windows. By replacing the glass only, instead of tearing out the window frame as well, I have saved $1,900.

    Replacing a section of carpet

When my Berber carpet began to unravel in places, like a run in a pair of stockings, I thought of replacing the carpet. I went to my home improvement store and received a quote for $2,100. Instead, of replacing the carpet with a brand new one, I decided to fix the existing one at no cost at all.

I had saved the leftover carpet from the initial installation. Using a sharp utility knife, I cut the damaged area out of the carpet. Then I inserted an identically sized strip from the leftover carpet. To hide the seam, I used a little fabric glue to connect the fibers on either side of the cut. In less than 2 hours I fixed my torn carpet and saved $2,100.

Replacing rotten wood on my deck

After an especially hot summer, some wood in my deck began to rot dangerously. I thought of replacing the floor of the deck completely, but the quote from a contractor came to $1,800.

Instead, I decided to pry out the rotten wood myself and replace it with new 2x4 lumber. After cutting each piece down to size, I first primed and painted it before installing it in the deck. As a result, I avoided having to repaint the whole deck. The project cost me $430, saving me $1,370.

Conn. cops: Dylan McDermott's mom murdered in '67 - June 27, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) - A reopened police investigation has concluded that actor Dylan McDermott's mother was killed in 1967 by her now-dead gangster boyfriend.

Waterbury police reopened the investigation last year into Diane McDermott's death after Dylan McDermott contacted them with questions, the Republican-American newspaper reported (http://bit.ly/KX4WBx ) Sunday and Monday as part of a two-part series.

He was 5 years old when his mother was shot in February 1967. Her death was originally ruled an accident.

Police told the newspaper that the evidence they found would be enough to file murder charges against John Sponza, who lived with McDermott at the time. He had told authorities that McDermott accidently shot herself after picking up a gun he had been cleaning.

Sponza, who police say had ties to organized crime, was shot to death in 1972, his body found in the trunk of a car in a Waltham, Mass., grocery store parking lot.

The state's medical examiner, H. Wayne Carver, reviewed McDermott's autopsy and determined that the gun found near the body was too small a caliber to have been the weapon used to kill her. The wound also showed that the murder weapon had been pressed to the back of her head, according to his report.

Police Superintendent Michael Gugliotti also stumbled over some of the initial findings.

"What troubled me was that there was very little follow up other than the statement Sponza had given to police," Gugliotti said.

"Sponza is telling the police that night that he very rarely, if ever, had arguments, yet everyone we spoke to, including Dylan, who was only 5 at the time, remembered very violent, vicious arguments," he added. "Dylan vividly recalls the amount of times, not only flashing the gun, but pointing it at the kid, saying, 'Shut up and get out of here.' He's still probably traumatized by that."

Dylan McDermott, who won a Golden Globe in 1999 for his role on the TV drama "The Practice," declined to comment to the newspaper about the investigation. His sister, Robin Herrera, said she is relieved that the truth has been discovered.

Bethlehem art gallery plans public art installation to bring attention to Five Points neighborhood - June 25, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Reinaldo Valentins venture as an art gallery owner isnt just about making his business successful.

The owner of NewVox Art Gallery in Bethlehems Five Points area believes his gallery can help revitalize the neighborhood.

A new project combines both goals. Streetfluence will be a public art exhibition on several sites spanning the neighborhood.

Whitehall Township-area artist Tom Evans will be doing spray-paint portraits of neighborhood residents on both sides of the former Ye Olde Ale House. Bethlehem Township artist Jason Schwab will be doing a cityscape inspired by the Five Points area on the side of a building at Wyandotte and West Fourth streets.

Artists Stephen Haigh, of Philadelphia, Joel Mambru, of Allentown, and Matthew Nixon, of Easton, will be doing murals inside the parking garage on West Fourth Street.

Bethlehem artist Lavanya Patricella will be yarn bombing the neighborhood, or wrapping her knitting around trees or light poles.

Developer Larry Eighmy owns both buildings, as well as the West Fourth Street parking garage, and is strongly supportive of the project, Valentin said. Eighmy couldnt be reached for comment last week but hes regularly spoken of the areas potential and his plans for a zero-carbon neighborhood there.

Schwab plans to draw inspiration from the neighborhood in the cityscape hell be making out of wheat paste on the side of Eighmys planned gastropub. He plans to use local business names on the billboards he will incorporate in his scene.

Streetfluence is the first of several public art installations Valentin has planned. While he waits for NewVox to be better known and he awaits crucial on-street parking in the neighborhood he plans to bring his gallerys artwork to other parts of the Lehigh Valley. His next public art project will involve a mobile truck outfitted by collage artists.

Photo Release — Electronic House(TM) Awards Avista With Bronze Award for Custom Home Theater Redesign - June 21, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

WEST COLUMBIA, S.C., June 20, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The publishers of Electronic House Magazine recently awarded Avista, a local firm that specializes in custom design and installation of integrated electronic systems, with a bronze award as part of the 2012 Electronic House Home of the Year Awards. Avista's Old Cherokee Home Theater project placed third in the Home Theater Design, $75,000-$150,000 category.

A photo accompanying this release is available at http://www.globenewswire.com/newsroom/prs/?pkgid=13378

"We are so pleased to be recognized for our work by one of the most respected publishers in our field," said Avista owner Matt Bridges. "It's an honor to be the only SC-based firm selected among entries received in 11 different categories. And just as important, we're glad we developed an end product that exceeded our clients' expectations."

Featured in the May-June 2012 issue of Electronic House, the Avista project was a redesign of a do-it-yourself home theater that had been installed by the client's previous homeowner. According to Bridges, the room required quite a bit of construction and design work to create a more attractive and functional space.

"The original screen wall had two windows that had been covered with construction paper. There was a faux wall on top of the sheetrock, and the speakers were sitting on top of homemade built-in cabinets. To make matters worse, the projector was hanging down from a huge telescopic pole nearly five feet from the ceiling," Bridges explained.

With the help of carpenter Chris Truett and interior designer Ashley Petty, Avista created a spectacular new space with custom cabinets, dramatic carpet, custom acoustic panels and window coverings to create a professional look. Bridges reworked the electronic equipment to incorporate a JVC projector, THX Ultra II Plus Klipsch speakers and subwoofers along with a URC MX-6000 remote control and MSC-400 processor to control the new system. Bridges said the results were a relaxed family space where the clients could enjoy an evening playing video games or watching their favorite movie and experience a much improved video and sound experience.

Avista offers comprehensive start-to-finish design services for integration of audio, video and security systems for residential and commercial customers. The Avista team works with an array of architects, builders, and interior designers to ensure seamless integration of the latest technologies for your home or business.
