July 17, 2014 -- An in-depth investigation has concluded that people who smokemarijuanaare much more likely to have paranoia than people who don't use the drug.
The study also identifies psychological factors that can lead to feelings of paranoia in people exposed to the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, THC.
The team of researchers, led by Professor Daniel Freeman, PHD, of the University of Oxford, found that worrying, low self-esteem,anxiety,depression,and having a range of unsettling changes in perceptions most likely lead to the feelings of paranoia.
A paranoid person is someone who has an unfounded fear that others intend to harm them. Many people have some degree of paranoia. Those who are young, poor, in bad health, contemplating suicide, or using marijuana (also called cannabis) are more prone to have paranoid episodes.
The scientists set out to explore two things:
They tested 121 participants between the ages of 21 and 50. All of them had taken marijuana at least once before.
None of the participants had a history ofmental illness, and all were screened to rule out relevant health conditions. But all of those taking part said they'd felt paranoid at least once in the previous month.
The volunteers were not invited to smoke joints. Instead, the scientists injected some of them with THC in order to ensure the results were as accurate as possible.

Newswise MANHATTAN, Kansas Ultrafast X-ray laser research led by Kansas State University has provided scientists with a snapshot of a fundamental molecular phenomenon. The finding sheds new light on microscopic electron motion in molecules.
Artem Rudenko, assistant professor of physics and a member of the university's James R. Macdonald Laboratory; Daniel Rolles, currently a junior research group leader at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron in Hamburg, Germany, who will be joining the university's physics department in January 2015; and an international group of collaborators studied how an electron moves between different atoms in an exploding molecule.
Researchers measured at which distances between the two atoms the electron transfer can occur. Charge transfer processes particularly electron transfer are important for photosynthesis in solar cells, and drive many other important reactions in physics, chemistry and biology.
Their observation, "Imaging charge transfer in iodomethane upon x-ray photoabsorption," appears in the journal Science.
"There is a very fundamental question about how far an electron can go to reach the nearby atom in a molecule, and how probable that transition is," Rudenko said. "It has been difficult to capture images of this motion because of the very short times and very small distances that need to be measured."
To find the answer, scientists shot an ultrafast optical laser at iodomethane molecules molecules made of an iodine atom and a methyl group to break the bond of these two partners.
The molecules were hit with an intense, ultrashort X-ray pulse to strip the electrons from the inner shells of the iodine atom as well as to study the charge transfer between the fragments. The experiment was performed using the Linac Coherent Light Source, the world's most powerful X-ray laser. The laser is at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California and delivers femtosecond X-ray pulses. One femtosecond is one-millionth of a billionth of a second.
Researchers were able to see electrons jumping over surprisingly long distances up to 10 times the length of the original, intact molecule.

Oregons Department of Environmental Quality has suspended All-Out Sewer and Drains license to operate in that state and has proposed revoking it entirely.
The DEQ issued the notice July 10, saying the business has been operating without a surety bond, which gives customers liability protection from the company.
Given the companys history of violating the law, including illegal activities in Washington and a failure to maintain a surety bond a necessary part of doing business in Oregon we believe its necessary to revoke the license to protect the health and safety of the public in Oregon, said Esther Westbrook at the DEQ.
All-Outs attorney, Wayne Fricke, said that just isnt the case.
A lot of the information in the notice is not accurate, he said. Not only has there been a bond, theyve been covered and (the department) refuses to acknowledge it.
Fricke said the company plans to appeal the suspension and proposed revocation.
If people have a reason to do something it ought to be a legitimate reason, he said.
Westbrook said the DEQ wont allow the company to reapply for a license under a different name if it is fully revoked.
Joanne Caldwell took over running All-Out in February after her husbands license was revoked in Washington. Ray Caldwell started serving a 27-month prison term on July 3 in Sheridan, Ore., southwest of McMinnville. He was convicted in December of 25 counts of breaking the Clean Water Act and eight other charges related to years of illegal dumping of septic tank waste. Caldwell and the company were fined $250,000 and ordered to pay more than $600,000 in restitution to Three Rivers Regional Wastewater, the city of Longview and Cowlitz County.
Caldwell is appealing his sentence, which Fricke said is in its early stages, though the restitution likely wont be revisited.

GOLDEN, Ill. (AP) - From a window of his home just up the street, Kenny Miller keeps watch over a construction project at Golden Good Shepherd Home.
So do the homes residents, who enjoy sitting outside to monitor the work in progress.
The four-room addition, plus a beauty shop and a spa, is a first for the home.
Although an activity room and new entrance have been added in the past, the roughly $300,000 project is the first resident room addition in the homes 50-year history.
We just need more room, Miller, who heads the homes board, said.
The 42-bed home generally stays full and has a waiting list, making it difficult to serve people who counted on making Good Shepherd their home.
Our facility was built by the Golden community, and on occasion we werent able to take some of our community members who had been active on our board or involved over time, Administrator Amanda Marlow said. We also werent able to take in new residents as often or those on Medicare to do rehab and generate that extra revenue.
Adding four beds was the least complicated way to expand without needing to meet additional state requirements, Marlow said.
Beyond the rooms, the project offers other amenities for residents.
We need to update our beauty shop. Its kind of stuck in the corner and not very large, Marlow said. Our spa will have a new whirlpool tub, showers. It will just be something a little bit nicer, more luxurious.

FAIRFIELD TWP.
Plans to build the first Quaker Steak and Lube in Butler County have been put on hold.
The restaurant, first announced in 2012, had been slated to be built on a 5.3-acre lot at Joseph and Gilmore Roads near the Menards home improvement store. However, the increasing cost of construction made the project not feasible, officials told the Journal-News on Thursday.
The price for the building had been projected at $1.2 million, but estimates came in at $1.7 million, according to Jim Combs, president of Paragon Restaurant Group, the developer of the project.
The price of steel and other products went up more than I would ever have imagined, Combs said. And it was going to cost a half-million dollars more to build that building than it did our other buildings we tried to figure out how to make the economics work on it, we just couldnt do it.
Combs said it wasnt any one material that increased in price, but a range of them, from steel to signage. Costs increased anywhere from three percent to 20 percent, he said.
A report by the firm Building Design and Construction states that as of late last year, construction costs had increased for 22 consecutive months. Driving that increase were labor costs, amid concerns about the availability of skilled workers.
Combs would still like to build a restaurant there, so he wont say the project is canceled, but at least for now, it looks unlikely.
Wed love to be there. Thats the sad part about it. Maybe when things change, if the cost of materials goes down, it could revive itself, but thats not what were hearing the contractor Ive talked to (said) nothing had changed in the direction of us being able to afford the building.
Its unfortunate for the township that theyre not coming at this time, Township Trustee President Shannon Hartkemeyer said. I understand its not economically feasible for them, but I hope they reconsider. Wed love to have them.

After being vacant about two years, the Friendlys restaurant building on Glen Street in Queensbury is slated to reopen in the fall as a new restaurant offering healthful fast food.
Childhood friends Kevin Shufelt, of Queensbury, and Joe McCrudden, of Clifton Park, are going into business together to open the new restaurant, FX3 Fit Food Fast, at 682 Glen St. in Queensbury.
The pair, who grew up together in Columbia County, will combine two different career backgrounds in the new venture.
McCrudden works in marketing while Shufelt has the restaurant background. He owned the floating barge restaurant on the Hudson River in Albany called Riverfront Bar and Grill from 1996 to 2011 and has owned another floating barge eatery, The Rusty Anchor in Watervliet, since 2006.
The new restaurant was inspired by the fact that, in their travels, Shufelt and McCrudden have found it difficult to find healthful food on the go.
They are renovating the building and hope to open the new restaurant by Sept. 1. Shufelt said theyll provide updates on their website and Facebook page.
We love the location because its right on Glen Street, on the main drag across from Price Chopper, Shufelt said.
Theyre working with nutritionists and chefs to develop the new menu, which includes nutritional information. Options include burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches and wraps and fries that are baked in a special crisping oven.
Consignment celebration
The construction on Broad Street in downtown Glens Falls has created a logistical challenge for many businesses, with the portions of the road closed to car and foot traffic as sewer lines, sidewalks and roadways are upgraded.

Superior Builders and Remodelers, a full service home remodeling contractor, is celebrating the launch of its new website, superiorbaybuilders.com, which provides homeowners with essential information about the company's residential remodeling services.
We are thrilled with the new website, said David Lorber, the owner of this second-generation, family-owned business. It is very intuitive to use, provides homeowners with useful remodeling information, and communicates our story very directly. It also includes new information about our approach."
From beautiful kitchens to attractive bathrooms to spacious additions to exteriors that provide breathtaking views, Superior Builders and Remodelers specializes in all areas of residential remodeling. Lorber said that all jobs are completed in the same fashion: a clear plan is first discussed and agreed upon with the homeowner. The plan is then put into action, generally starting with the design phase. Last, in the build phase, "the job is undertaken and completed with great attention to detail," he said, "to arrive at the exact the look and feel the client desires."
Superior Builders and Remodelers practical methods ensure that each clients vision is realized. The new site clearly explains value engineering, Superiors practice of reducing cost while maintaining excellence in every facet of a job.
Value engineering is really about conscious decision making to benefit our clients, David explained. "Its how we make wise, cost-saving choices for homeowners in pre-planning, planning, and in all phases of design and build. These are decisions about materials and equipment choices, the scope of a project and the labor needed and other critical factors. Essentially, value engineering offers homeowners long-term value at the right price."
Additionally, the new website includes Featured Projects, which highlights recent work completed projects. Castro Valley Two-Phase Remodel, Oakland Hills Makeover, and Rockridge Craftsman Renovation provide an overview of the type of work the company can complete. These projects vary greatly in terms of process and final look and feel. Collectively, they provide a nice overview of the type of work we can doeverything from kitchen and bath, to attics and basements, to whole-house remodels to a wide range exterior projects.
The website also mentions several reasons why homeowners should choose Superior Builders and Remodelers. I kept it pretty short by listing only four points, Lorber explained. But we feel it leaves visitors with a strong first impression. After all, how many A+ rated Better Business Bureau general contractors have been remodeling homes for 50-plus years without a single complaint filed against them?
Superior Builders and Remodelers is a design/build residential remodeling company that was founded in 1947 and with a lasting reputation for expert craftsmanship and superior service. Owner David Lorber was raised in Oakland and has been a licensed general contractor for more than 30 years.
